MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Congress should act quickly, before new members take their seats, to repeal the military's ban on gays serving openly in the military.
He, however, did not sound optimistic that the current Congress would use a brief postelection session to get rid of the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."
"I would like to see the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" but I'm not sure what the prospects for that are," Gates said Saturday, as he traveled to defense and diplomatic meetings in Australia.
Unless the lame-duck Congress acts, the repeal effort is considered dead for now.

He was appointed to a position where he could have shone. Instead he remained a grey, faceless bureacrat toiling in a position above his grasp and vision.

It's Kafka-esque that such a man holds such a critical position in the defense and security apparatus of our country. Like a chameleon he is a man that can plaster himself to any new regime.......and without scruples adopt his color to it.
No man of honor, principles or true patriotism could work for the evil thugocracy running this nation. He should have resigned long ago but his apparatchik type does not do so. They plough on. They can shift their character easily. If a Josef Stalin became our president he would remain in his postion if asked.....like any amoral functionary worth his salt would.
His out-of-the-blue statement on Don't Ask, Don't Tell is rather strange. It's worth keeping an eye on Gates to fathom not so much WHAT he said, but WHY he's saying it at this time.
As a willing-tool type of humanoid, he's undoubtedly doing his master's bidding....or maybe it's for some other reason we don't know yet. It remains to be seen what his motives are. However with shadowy characters like Gates, we may never know.
I never trusted him for a moment after I saw how stayed on to work with dedication for a marxist regime.
He creeps me out big time. He's like a character out of those cold-war "film noir" classics that were replete with easily-adaptable protagonists and moles operating unnoticed in the fogs of the Cold War.

Gates is a Foreign Policy Realist aka Pragmatist. Other prominent Republican Realists are Kissinger, Brent Scowcroft, James Baker, George Schultz, Colin Powell, Condi Rice.
There are also Democrat Realists. Most prominent would be Brzezinski, Sam Nunn, Lee Hamilton. Keep in mind that Gates served three times as Deputy NSA. First under Kissinger, then under Brzezinski under Carter, then under Scowcroft under GHW Bush.
There are also politically unaffiliated Realists such as Generals Jones, Petraeus, and Eikenberry. Recall that General Colin Powell was politically unaffiliated when he served as NSA under Reagan. He was recruited by both Dems and Pubs and became a republican.
Typically a Republican Prez's foreign Policy team will be composed Realists and NeoCons, but one will dominate.
The NeoCons dominated Reagan's first term and the Realists dominated his second term. The Realists dominated GHW Bush's foreign policy with Scowcroft, Baker, Gates, Rice, and Powell while the NeoCons were congregated in the defense dept under Cheney.
Under GW Bush the NeoCons dominated until the Iraq Study Group was convened and it was chaired by Republican Realist James Baker and Democrat Realist Lee Hamilton. Realist Gates went from being a member of the Iraq Study Group to SecDef replacing NeoCon Rumsfeld. In 2007 the Iraqi Security Forces Independent Assessment Commission was convened and it was chaired by Realist General Jones. In 2008 the Afghanistan Study Group was convened and it was co-chaired by Realist General Jones and Realist Thomas Pickering.
In campaign 2008, McCain campaigned on NeoCon foreign policies and Obama campaigned on Realist foreign policies. Like Carter and Clinton, Obama's foreign policy team is composed of Realists and Liberal Interventionists, with the Realists dominating.

It is not just the voters, it is the military itself! The survey from within the military is due to be released in Dec. Gates knows what’s coming. It is oh so easy for those at the Pentagon to proclaim to be oh so pc, but lets see what the NCO’s have to say about it! They will be the ones who will have to deal with the ramifications.
Gays are not prohibited from serving, they are prohibited from acting on their sexual desires while on duty or in uniform, keep it to yourself.
This is just another example of where the militant gay lobby has stepped in it again. The military is not a place for social activism and everything the gays touch becomes social activism.
99% of those making an issue over DADT would never in a million years enter the military even if was repealed!
He's trying to close JFCOM(a local issue here in Norfolk, VA area) without any data to support his theory that it will cut costs. It's not that he's closing it, he's just moving it. Then he wants to increase the cost of tricare for military retirees (something he's been pushing for close to 10 years) and now this. Can someone please push this a$$hat out of the government, now?
They do all seem to worship at the globalist alter...sad but true. And it will be interesting to see how the new incoming congressmen play out - can they resist, or are we too far down the path already?
I this whole move as the intentional destruction of our traditional military. Who would make better “globalist” soldiers...Americans, or militant homos?
From where I am sitting right now, I have a picture of my son shaking hands with Robert Gates standing in front of Eagle Tower at Fort Benning. He also gave my son a Sec. Def. coin. It kills me that he would even think our messing with or troops this way!
