Hatch re-election could be iffy, according to new poll ( Utah )

More Utahns want Sen. Orrin Hatch replaced than want to see him re-elected to another six-year term, according to a Salt Lake Tribune poll of likely voters conducted the week before Tuesday’s vote.

The survey noted that Hatch isn’t up for re-election until 2012, but asked if the vote were held today, would voters back him or someone else? Forty percent of likely voters would give him a seventh term, while 48 percent say they were inclined to favor another candidate. Twelve percent remained unsure. The poll, conducted by Washington, D.C.-based Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Hatch — who knows he’s a potential target by tea party Republicans on the right and someone like Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson on the left — is confident past supporters will return to the fold.

Orrin Hatch should take the hint and retire. He’s been around since Jimmy Carter was President. Its time for new blood and fresh ideas in conservative governance.

To most of America, Orrin Hatch is seen as the representative of Mormons; however, he has supported stem-cell research and countless ACLU judges, acts which no Christian would do. If the Mormons would like to be seen as Christian to the rest of America, then they will have to unceremoniously boot this scalawag out of office before they can make progress with the rest of us.

They kicked out Bennett, so I have hope for Utah.

Yeah, he would wear that bow tie and just love to play both sides and loved the camera. He would string the right along only to cave when it really counted. I would have liked to have seen the fear in his face the night Bennett got the boot - probably said/thought “OMG, these people are idiots”.

If he was up this go round instead of Bennett, he would have been gone too.

He’s my senator and I’ll not vote for him. His comment about waiting for what Kagan had to say for herself before deciding on her appointment speaks volumes, as does his comment in support of Muslims. He’s even sent me a CD of songs he wrote and sung for Christmas. If I wanted a good friend of the Democrats, why wouldn’t I just vote Democrat?

He was good in the 80s and ok for most of the 90s. He's old and has become a product of the DC cocktail circuit and needs to go. In his defense, I can't think of any Republican who has been there for that long who didn't become a RINO by the end. Barry Goldwater, for example, was getting more liberal by the minute at the end of his career.

If Utah still has that party caucus system of picking the nominee in 2012, I would imagine that Hatch will be gone. He ought to retire and go honorably instead of being forced out.

Time for him to sell his mansion in the VA suburbs and return to the quiet beauty of the Wasatch Mountains.

Absolutely correct! Ted Kennedy’s dearest friend needs to retire or be retired. Almost all of the republicans senators up for re-election in 2012 are RINOs. They need to be reminded that RINOs are sure losers in republican primaries. Just ask Castle and Crist, and unless they think they can become princess Lisa, they had better vote like a conservative now and consider retirement later.

Never the less we will have 21 democrats and 2 independents to get rid of in 2012 as well as the RINO republicans running.

Another one sitting on the sidelines telling the Tea Party what to do? The Tea Party groups have already set their sightes on the next round as well as 2014. This is not a one-time shot. Do yourself and our country a favor and join one and support it with whatever limited time you have, even if it is just enough to attend a monthly meeting.
