California: The Lindsay Lohan of States
WSJ ^ | 11/8/10 | Allysia Finley

Posted on 11/08/2010 12:05:07 PM PST by Mikey_1962

Listen up, California. The other 48 states—your cousin New York excluded—are sick of your bratty arrogance. You're the Lindsay Lohan of states: a prima donna who once showed some talent but is now too wasted to do anything with it.

After enjoying ephemeral highs and spending binges, you suffer crashes that culminate in brief, unsuccessful stints in rehab. This cycle repeats itself every five to 10 years, as the rest of the country looks on with a mixture of horror and amusement. We'd feel sorry for you if you didn't constantly flip us the bird.

Instead, we're making bets on how long it will be before your next meltdown. Oh, wait—you're already melting down.

You've racked up nearly $70 billion in general obligation debt, and that doesn't include your $500 billion unfunded pension liability. Your own analysts predict you'll face a hole of at least $80 billion over the next four years.

Your government's run by a brothel of environmentalists, lawyers, public-sector unions and legislative bums. When they're not taxing or spending, they're creating regulations and commissions like the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and the California Blueberry Commission. Many businesses would leave if it weren't for your sunny climate.

Which may explain why you're so obsessed with climate change. If your climate changes, no one, including your Hollywood friends, would tolerate you anymore. So you've created a law to tax carbon emissions—no matter that it will kill jobs.

It's not as if you don't recognize that you've got problems. Roughly three-quarters of you say you're headed in the wrong direction.

snip

We've tried to help you, California. Some spent millions on campaigns to entice you to change your reckless behavior.

So here's our final warning: When you inevitably crash and burn, don't count on us to bail you out.

Isn’t that illegal? Anyone going after our government?

With the 2/3 rule against tax increases thrown out, the DemocRATS in charge of all branches of government, and a new method of redistricting about to he installed, the Republican tsunami seen elsewhere may be two years delayed in California.

Let's see if we can stop thecoming bailout.

I suspect that a large bailout is central to Gov Moonbeam's plans.

Here in Texas, we are absorbing mucho businesses from California that are moving their headquarters here. I see Cali plates on cars almost daily.

We are gaining 4 more seats in the US House and just went to a deeper shade of red. It appears we are getting the right-thinking Californians leaving the dead-beats and scum there in the Golden State. Though not scientific, this is the impression that I am getting.

Lindsay Lohan is in a LOT better shape than CA. Maybe by some miracle - she may change. The state of CA reelecting Moonbeam is pretty much hopeless.

How pathetic that someone who run for an office 20+ years later?

How pathetic is it that populace would elect him a second time?

There will be no Republican tsunami in California. Two out of three Mexican voters vote democrat. If Los Angeles County seceded and joined Mexico we could save the rest of California.

Is all torn up inside

We already have deadbeats in Texas. It’s called Austin. Austin is the one city in the country that takes it’s cues from all of the goofy, silly and stupid ideas from California. Just about every major street corner in Austin Texas has at least two bums working the corners for money.

With the 2/3 rule against tax increases thrown out,

Not true. What was thrown out was the 3/3 requirement for passing a budget, not tax increases.

There's a line in the Francis Ford Coppola movie Rumblefish, spoken by Mickey Rourke, that went something like this: "California's like a beautiful, wild... beautiful, wild girl on heroin... who's high as a kite, thinkin' she's on top of the world, not knowing she's dying even if you show her the marks."

Also amazing is that Rumblefish came out in 1983, 27 years ago, when the governor's office had just switched to George Deukmejian from... you guessed it... Jerry Brown.

Generally speaking, leftwing states vote for high taxes on themselves and send them money to rightwing states that opposed the plan (but gladly cash the check).

But for who long?

She's about three or four years from having to go on a reality show.

It's a good analogy, but you could take it further.

Who's the Dina and Michael Lohan or the Samantha Ronson of the Lindsay Lohan state?

With the 2/3 rule against tax increases thrown out

It was was the 2/3 budget passing rule that was thrown out. A supermajority is still required to raise taxes. In addition voters added a 2/3rd majority to raise "fees", which the legislature had used in the past to short-circuit the supermajority required to raise taxes.

The latest pro-California propaganda being run on TV has a message that tried to say “We’re not a bunch of fruits, nuts and flakes”.

And features Betty White at the end, inviting people to come and see for themselves.

Another example of the left dragging out old actors to promote failed socialist states and policies.

I’m not debating the accuracy. The problem is conservatives allowing the commies to push them out of the state. This is where the real fight is.

Wow, another smarmy thread about California. How original.

Since 99% of Free Republic is the posting of an already printed article originality is not the purpose; the purpose is to bring attention to an enlightened opinion.

If the people of the State of California chose to spend themselves into oblivion to benefit those who suckle at the Government teat, so be it.

Just don't ask the taxpayers of the rest of the country to subsidize their financial folly.

BTW I believe the author was not being smarmy but the exact opposite: sincerely earnest about California's descent in to the abyss.
