Is an official Mexican ID official enough for Durham? The City Council will decide Nov. 15.

Members sounded ready to approve the Matricula Consular as a valid ID at a Thursday work session, but the council deferred formal action until its next regular meeting at the request of Councilman Howard Clement.

"I need more information," he said.

Pilar Rocha-Goldberg, director of El Centro Hispano in Durham, had hoped the council would adopt a resolution recognizing the Matricula Consular on the spot, but she was not worried by the delay.

"We've been working hard on this," she said. "We can wait."

According to the resolution, foreigners in the past could qualify for a North Carolina driver's license to use as ID if they had a federal Tax Identification Number. Now, applicants must have a Social Security number, but still need to prove their identities on occasion.

Looks like they're trying to get illegals "legal". Get in touch with your Councilors to let them know how you feel.

Didn’t these morons get the memo? The clowns at the 9th Circus have decided that it is “unconstitutional” to ask an illegal alien for identification.

Security issues

According to Representative Scott Garrett, Republican of New Jersey, the use of the MCAS cards by undocumented migrants weakens the measures established by the U.S. Congress after “9/11 to safeguard American businesses and financial institutions against fraud and abuse”.[4] U.S. law enforcement officials also cite that Matricula Consular cards are issued by Mexican Consulate without checking the authenticity of the applicant’s supporting documentation.

Identifies them as a citizen of Mexico who might have a Mexican driver’s license - nothing more.

This article 'sugarcoats' what is taking place. In Durham, NC the 'card' is being recognized as a DL, on an order to police, from city council. The 'illegals' can drive on the card, do not have to purchase insurance to drive, do not have to purchase a tag. To purchase a tag in NC, one has to have insurance. This opens a huge can of worms. The 'legal' purchasers of insurance in NC will be forced to pick up the tab for the illegals.

There is a debate taking place across the state regarding this situation and I have been able to listen to some of the ongoing debate. This does not bode well if Durham proceeds to ratify, for the entire state of NC.

I hope I have most of this information correct. Perhaps someone else has some information.

Whoa! Sounds like you need to let people near you know about this!
If enough of them contact these Councilors, maybe they can stop it.

talk radio, in the state is attempting to get the word out. I am not close enough to the situation to help, regretfully. I have been listening via talk radio, from NC. There is much more that is being discussed regarding this issue, regarding terrorism, that is being discussed in the background. Talk radio is touching on this but this will open a can of worms for Durham and its citizens, as well as implications for the entire state, and perhaps even the entire East Coast.

NC is basically an asylum state. I just moved from NC to SWVA. It was overrun with illegals. Some of the smaller cities that were once ag or manufacturing based are now majority Hispanic. It’s amazing to see the demographic difference in this area as compared to NC. Tougher to get documentation here if my and my wife’s DMV experience is any indication.

Here in NJ we need all kinds of documents to renew our drivers’ licenses; at the same time, California is debating giving them to illegal aliens. “United” States my arse! How bizarre is that?

Supposedly some banks are accepting those Mexican ID cards to open accounts (can’t have banks miss out on that piece of the action); I’d love to get one myself to see what I can do with it. Does it double as an international phone card?

I used to live in VA in the 80s. Everytime I go back now there are more and more illegals.

Sadly, this town is so liberal that this is almost certainly a done deal. Durham County went 68/28 Obama in 2008 and 73/27 for the execrable commie incumbent Congresscritter David Price this year.

Durham’s power structure is an unholy combination of racist black semi-radicals and guilty white academic liberals (from over at Duke). The result is a city with a high crime rate, increasing taxes, and a major problem with illegal immigrants. It’s funny to watch the liberals in my neighborhood wring their hands and talk about, for example, the problem of drunk drivers and excessive speed on one of the neighborhood streets (Chapel Hill Road). They sit around and pie-in-the-sky about installing “traffic calming devices” (on a major through street!) or ripping the center out of the street and putting in a grass median to narrow it up and make it even more unsafe, or even banning cars on it completely! And they dance around the elephant in the room...the fact that the vast majority of drunk drivers and speeders on the street are illegals from Mexico and Central America. Deport them, and the problem is mostly solved...but no, can’t have that.
