Wow. This is the extent of the news update. Welcome to the new world of hi-tech journalism. I expected a bit more verbosity to say the least. Not your father's news service. It may be pithy and succinct and I suppose, reluctantly, the format does work but only in certain specific situations. I emphatically wouldn't want this venue as my only news source.

I neglected to say that this so-called aviation expert has zero credibility. I remember the cockamamie explanations for TWA flight 800 about sparks in the tank causing the explosion. It was a missile. That’s what people saw. That’s what it was. Just like in this case.

Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, started this by calling it a big missile.

My thought exactly!
This is beyond retarded. It was obviously an SLBM test, and they don't wanna talk about it. Even the NOTAM pegged the location, which was consistent with the video.
Not shocked that it's a journalism major saying the silly stuff...

I haven’t followed this in detail—but could it have been a shoulder fired missile from a terrorist aimed at a plane?
That sounds like something the administration would cover up after a nanosecond of debate.

It's moving much too slow to be a missile IMO. Most likely a contrail from an aircraft at a very high altitude.
There's lots of important issues to be concerned about. This isn't one of them but it is a sign of how jumpy everyone is.

Looks like a plane contrail to me. Missile launches move fast, even at 30 miles away. This just hangs for a long time like a subsonic plane.
The ‘true believers’ won’t believe anything less than it was some sort of horrific attack or a show of force by us though, no matter the evidence now.

Yep, TWA 800 was my first thought too. I never was real comfortable with the idea of running electrical lines inside fuel tanks, but WTH, that just me.
So, this was just a jet, nothing to worry about here! Just move along comrade.

I saw the video. I know what jet contrails look like. Way too much plume going vertical to be a jet contrail. That was a rocket or missile of some type. An SLBM, by the looks of it, launched just over the horizon. And footage of one of those isn’t hard to find to compare them.

If it was a jet well that ought to be easy enough to verify.
All planes are tracked by NORAD and the FAA.
It doesn’t look like contrails looks more like exaust from a solid rocket booster.
Wouldn’t there be other planes in the sky trailing contrails? I see them all the time overhead and there will be many of them, not just one.

I saw the interview. The guy is way beyond his “use by” date. Among other things he actually said, staring knowingly into the reporterettes eyes, that the missle came from an “underwater submarine”.
Actually the defense department take is just as amusing. It says the thing we all saw in the video, with an orange exhaust glow and rocket-like plume of smoke being jetted backward, could have been a conventional aircraft vapor trail. Something to do with being an optical illusion. Uh, tail number please.
But let’s run through the real possibilities on the assumption it was a rocket:
1. Misfire by US Navy vessel. Not good.
2. Misfire by foreign vessel. Not good. Especially this close to West Coast.
3. Warning shot by foreign vessel. See comment 2 above.
There is no up side to this story for the Defense Dept. or the Usurping Onada Administration.
To: Tolsti2
Then I suggest the FAA gets busy, releases to the public the airline and flight number along with the radar images as well as the fix data. That should be simple enough and will stop the story dead.

It would be the world’s slowest rocket for sure. The plume in the video doesn’t move like a real one either. It’s clearly a reflective jet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFKcMd8AME0
These things get up high enough so that the plume changes color/shape entirely after just a minute or so, not hover around like a contrail as this ‘mystery’ ones.
It’s just an amazing optical illusion and the timing was perfect to get that angle to look how it does.

Watching the tape it is clear that there is only one exhaust trail. It might have been a single engine fighter with the afterburner on, but where did it take off from, 35 miles out to sea?
I've been watching missiles(rockets) for the entire space age, ever since Vanguard and Farsides, and this was a missile.

I agree. The appearance of flame is probably the sun reflecting off the underside of the wings and body. Amazingly similar but the speed is what leads me to believe it is an aircraft or like you say, the slowest rocket/missile in the world.
