A group of demonstrators broke into the headquarters of Britain's governing Conservative party in London Wednesday, spray-painting anarchy symbols and setting off flares before being forced out of the building.
They went on to set fires outside the building.
The violence came during a largely peaceful protest by students against government plans to allow universities to increase tuition fees. The National Union of Students said 40,000 demonstrators were on the streets.
London's Metropolitan Police did not offer a crowd estimate or have any information about arrests.
Students and university staff are protesting against government plans to allow universities to charge up to 9,000 pounds (about $14,500) per year in tuition fees -- a substantial rise from the current cap.
"We are taking to the streets in unprecedented numbers to tell politicians that enough is enough," NUS president Aaron Porter said in a statement before the demonstration.
"We will not tolerate the previous generation passing on its debts to the next, nor will we pick up the bill to access a college and university education that was funded for them," he said.

Earth to spoiled brats: Stuff costs money. Money comes from wealth. Wealth comes from work. Work is hard.
These brats demonstrate the same attitude as in my soon to be ex-home of California. I DESERVE it because I WAS BORN!
I find it interesting that the Queen never weighs in on situations like this. Even though she is viewed as only a figured head, she has more power than people realize.
Is George Soros’ “RUCKUS”, present?
We have these kooks on campus here. I got into a debate with one about how we pay some of the lowest tuition fees in the world and I wouldn’t care if they increased tuition to market levels. I thought his head was going to explode.
Gov’t leaches get angry when the Gov’t cuts of their smack
Nanny staters, crying for the Gov’t tit.
The social leaches get angry when the Govt cuts off their smack
How many were Pakis???
I listened to a short snippet from the HOC. Britain is lost!
America is the last hope of the world. Zro needs to be Impeached.
It is the entitlement left that riots and causes violence.
Yet, take note of this quote, “We will not tolerate the previous generation passing on its debts to the next,...”
When you have a system of money that is based on EXCATELY what this states, that the bills get passed on to the next generation, ... well... would you want to pay it either???
The Republicans have better have a plan to put this country on a sound money footing, OR we WILL have riots in our country too. Even then, there will be riots from the welfare class. But there is going to be riots ANYWAY!!!!
AND the LEFT is going to use that to get what they want.
IF the repubs miss this opportunity, we will REALLY be ******.
‘Govt leaches get angry when the Govt cuts of their smack’
I wonder what will happen when the US doesn’t bail our California.
They haven’t learned anything worthwhile from the “free” education they already received, more isn’t going to fix “stupid”.
If free “Government Money” isn’t readily available, Universities will find ways to drop prices once the enrollment drops. If not, well, you don’t need a university degree to sit on your duff and collect welfare. Oh? That’s broke too? Oh dear. What will they do?
Earth to blind student hating people.
She doesn’t, for the same reason that she didn’t have James Hewitt tried, convicted and hanged for high treason back in 1992. Technically it is feasible, politically, it is not....
You are right. A lot of these people maybe typical naive, left-wing idiot students, but they do have a point about having to pay back the debts of previous generations. It isn’t hard to sympathise with their argument on that point...
