The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) will allow Reps.-elect Allen West (R-FL) and Tim Scott (R-SC) to join the overwhelmingly Democratic Capitol Hill organization if they so choose.
CBC Chairwoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) says that "membership in the Congressional Black Caucus has never been restricted to Democrats." Lee adds that West and Scott "will be welcomed" if they want to join the organization.
Scott is on the fence about joining. West says he'll sign up.
Voters haven't elected a black Republican to Congress since Rep. JC Watts (R-OK) served four terms, retiring in early 2003. Watts, who served in the Republican House leadership, declined to join the CBC.
But there is precedent for African American Republicans to join the CBC. Former Rep. Gary Franks (R-CT) and Del. Melvin Evans (R-VI) were both CBC members.
The CBC has denied admission to two white Congressmen who represent black constituencies: Reps. Pete Stark (D-CA) and Steve Cohen (D-TN).
In an interview with WOR radio, West said that he meets "all of the criteria and it's so important that we break down this monolithic voice that continues to talk about victimization and dependency in the black community."

That ought to make for some interesting conversation. :-)
Be wary, Congressmen. Be very wary.
Hopefully they will refuse to join the same as JC Watts refused to join an organization based on race.
That's the CBS's bread and butter.
They’re going to eat them alive.
What could they possibly achieve by joining?
Scott may be well served by joining and hitching his wagon to LtCol West.
The CBC is racist. They would scream bloody murder if anyone started a Congressional White Caucus.
AWW that’s mighty white of them.
They’ll do the same trick they did before to Gary Franks and JC Watts. Allow the Black Republicans to join the CBC but not allow them into special “Democrats only” sessions (this is where the real race-based deal making occurs). They’ll call it “executive session” or something.
“What could they possibly achieve by joining?”
Counter-intelligence, although there’s not much intelligence in the CBC as it is.
I think LTC West knows how to take care of himself.
But will he join the socialist party as all members are commie’s.
“Theyll do the same trick they did before to Gary Franks and JC Watts. Allow the Black Republicans to join the CBC but not allow them into special Democrats only sessions”
The biggest problem is that not only are they joining a strictly race-based organization, but their membership would make it a NON-PARTISAN race-based organization.
With more conservative outlets in the media their message of black empowerment through freedom might be heard. They’d get on talk shows etc.
This might be a plus.
Aren’t they more than racist? Aren’t there several communists or socialists in this organization?
Theyll do the same trick they did before to Gary Franks and JC Watts. Allow the Black Republicans to join the CBC but not allow them into special Democrats only sessions (this is where the real race-based deal making occurs). Theyll call it executive session or something.
Then they will need to make sure that there are NO closed door sessions. Either they are allowed in all processes or they point out how the CBC is a democrat machine, loudly and often.
Get used to it, Barbara Lee. Times are changing, and the Tea Party will be bringing more true Constitutionalists of your color to your race-based club.
Representative J. C. Watts of Oklahoma, who became the first black member of Congress who elected not to join the group because of its closely Democratic affiliation and goals. Watts said of his refusal to join the caucus, "...they said that I had sold out and Uncle Tom. And I said well, they deserve to have that view. But I have my thoughts. And I think they're race-hustling poverty pimps."
Me too...Let’s pray he finds a way to loudly articulate the message of economic independence and hard work and how they lead to success versus economic dependency on government handouts...black male children in this country need strong black conservative men to encourage them to achieve success not just racial hustlers, athletes, and rap moguls whom the media seem to enshrine as the voice of the black male.
