Japan's holographic rock star -- Miku Hatsune Virtual idol Miku Hatsune has gone from a character marketing voice synthesizing software to a full blown pop star -- pretty clever for a hologram By Robert Michael Poole 11 November, 2010 Select ratingPoorOkayGoodGreatAwesome PoorOkayGoodGreatAwesome. .EmailTwitterFacebookShare. Forget the tantrums, entourage and ridiculous riders. Here's one rock star that only needs electricity to keep her happy.

Following on from Japan's cybernetic pop star, Miku Hatsune has been filling venues in Japan since her first solo live show in March of this year. Originally a character designed to promote Yamaha's vocaloid synthesizing technology -- we all know how Japan loves its characters -- Miku has now taken to the stage and attracts fans in their thousands.

Awesome technology.

This has an unlimited future in strip clubs and stand up comedy.

And say goodbye to public school teachers and their unions!

The Union of Hologram Maintainers could be the creepiest thing you ever touched. :) Is that a stick?

Didn’t they do something like this with the Gorillaz a few years ago?

With the precursor to Sharon Apple already giving concerts, I’m curious when they will start to manufacture Ghost X-9 combat drones?

What is it with the Japanese and their relationship with artificial beings? I recently read about a resort where Japanese men can go to spend time with “girlfriends” who are all essentially cartoon characters (and all have the same bizarre look this hologram has, with big bulging eyes and strange hair). I don’t recall the details of the technology, whether the “girlfriends” were projected on screens in the rooms or if they were on some kind of device the men carried around with them, sort of like a video game.

In any case, I hope that’s not the wave of the future. Imagine if you were a Japanese woman who found that you had been replaced in your man’s affections by a cartoon character...

This is the second generation after the first (fake American President) was such a success.

I thought “Yeah, right”...until I saw the video.

Holy.Freaking.Cow.

Color me blown away. People were actually PAYING to see a real-looking person...who does NOT exist...singing and dancing on a stage.

You realize the Rolling Stones could play into the next 200 years with this technology? (They’d all be dead...except for Keith Richards, who’d probably still be living due to the chemical pickling he’s already gone through...)

can’t distinguish this from just another CGI after the fact add in.

IOW the clips don’t seem to prove up the claim.

Is this for real? What the heck are they using to do this kind of holographic projection?

I am not really into that kind of thing, so I would not know one way or the other. But I suppose it wouldn’t surprise me.
