Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson and his wife were arrested at their home Friday and charged in federal court with trying to hide or destroy the proceeds from a bribe from a local developer, according to court papers and federal law enforcement authorities.

Johnson and his wife, Leslie E. Johnson, were charged with evidence tampering and destruction, alteration and falsification of records. After brief hearings late Friday, U.S. Magistrate Judge William Connolly ordered Jack Johnson to be released and placed under electronic monitoring. The judge released Leslie Johnson on her own recognizance. Both Johnsons were ordered to surrender their passports.

The charges stem from a frantic phone call on Friday in which Leslie Johnson told her husband that "two women were at the door" and ultimately ended when federal agents found $76,000 in Leslie Johnson's underwear, according to an affidavit in support of the criminal charges.

The pair were taken away in handcuffs separately shortly before 1 p.m. Johnson, wearing a camel-colored suit and white shirt, did not address reporters' questions. The Johnsons made their initial court appearances late Friday and did not enter a plea. A hearing was scheduled for next month.

In an unusually detailed account of the sting by federal agents filed in federal court Friday, the agents allege that beginning as early as 2007, Jack Johnson began receiving money from an unidentified developer to secure federal housing funds for the developer's projects in the county. Those payments allegedly included a $100,000 check, according to an affidavit in support of the criminal complaint.

The allegations are based on wiretaps, cooperating sources and other information, according to the document.

On or about Nov. 5, 2010, the same developer allegedly gave Jack Johnson $5,000 in cash for "using his official influence and authority for the benefit of"...

Nowhere in the article does it mention he's a Democrat, but he is.

That’s because that would be racist, besides he is in the Amish Party.

Steny Hoyer used to live in Prince George's County. He was elected to the State senate representing that area.

FInally, he was elected to Congress.

Along the way the African-American population grew sufficiently that "they took over" ~ and the new political bosses told Steny to go find a new "white" district because from now on this was their new "black" district and they were going to be sending in black Congressmen from now on.

Steny moved to a different district.

Prince Georges county MD has been corrupt since earliest times ~ we might start at the time the Brits took the plantations and tobacco farms away from the Catholic farmers and gave them to the new Protestant farmers just then moving in.

If it ain't one thing it's another over there.

Thanks for the background, I was unfamiliar with it. I kinda suspected it might be the rule rather than the exception from the way this was written and the length of time of the investigation. Sounds like there’ll be some more people going down.

Well done Holder DOJ; under Bush the FBI raids came before the election (see Curt Weldon (R) ‘06, although those were trumped up charges, it did open the door for the now defunct Sestak to go to Congress)

“included a $100,000 check”

Bribery 101. Cash only. No checks.

Yep, he’s not the brightest bulb in the fixture. He must have figured out after he got the check there was no way to cash it without incriminating himself. LOL!

Link to the full affidavit via the WP.

Note that prior to becoming County Executive, Johnson was County State's Attorney. This is extremely embarrassing to the Obama administration on several levels.

He better have lots of legit money in the bank for attorney fees, he’s going to need it before he and his wife go to a federal slammer. :)

His governing style has been very similar and invites comparisons, such as expensive high-profile trips overseas overseas while in office (Johnson's trip to Senegal in 2006 comes to mind).

Wife Leslie Johnson, the incoming PG County Council member, is also an attorney and longtime bureaucrat (see her bio here).

Prince Georges County is a notorious 'rathole with Dems outnumbering all other parties combined by 78%. As muawiyah said, PG has been a corrupt sewer of a place since long before it became majority African-American. The county is named for a syphilitic for heavens sakes! Its history of corruption can be compared to Chicago.
