A-T-F- says since they initiated "Project Gun Runner" which is tracing weapons, their prosecutions have gone up 50 percent and their investigations up 109%.
He also says a recent program called e-trace, an electronic database that can trace the manufacture, import, sale and ownership of guns will be helpful here in the U-S as well as in Mexico.

Obama needs to get his head out of his ass and focus on border security. This pos should be arrested and tried for treason.
If "e-trace" tracks ownership, doesn't it violent several existing federal law?
Interesting stat when you think about it.

Someone is full of what comes out of the south end of a north bound bull. BATFE looking for a few more letters of the alphabet to add. I have a few suggestions, remaining comments self censored.
The 1986 Firearms Owners Protection Act specifically forbids registration of firearms records at 18 U.S.C. 926(a):
No such rule or regulation prescribed after the date of the enactment of the Firearms Owners Protection Act may require that records required to be maintained under this chapter or any portion of the contents of such records, be recorded at or transferred to a facility owned, managed, or controlled by the United States or any State or any political subdivision thereof, nor that any system of registration of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions or dispositions be established.
PS - Please excuse me "talking to myself", but immediately after I posted I remembered the above section of the federal law...
Yet, they keep their decapitated, drug murder victims in country.
I haven’t had my second quart of coffeee yet this morning...
That was my first thought also.
Why would anyone be smuggling “guns” into Mexico when the narco armys already have heavy military weapons? The narco gangs take on the Mexican army at will. Just where in the USA could the narcos arm up?
I was thinking the same thing, they doubled their effort for half the return on it.
These “studies” are USED to justify gun control in the U.S....PERIOD!!!
The drug cartels prefer FULL AUTO AK-47s!!!
Those come from corrupt military and police in Central and South America, or directly off the boat from China.
The relative handful that come through the U.S. are irrelevant.
Maybe the Mexicans should put up some kind of a fence or something.
CLOSE THE DAMNED BORDER!
Given the current mood of the country that could have been a Freudian slip.
Yes, interesting slight of hand: One arrest or prosecution in a year and the next year you have two—that is a 100% increase.
Meaningless stat without context and facts.
ATF is above the law.
Just ask them.
The BATFE requires that every firearm manufactured or imported into the USA be reported to them using a part of the Federal gun law (GCA68) that is supposed to be used for gathering industrial statistics. All firearms are required to have the manufacturer, importer and serial number markings applied to it. When a firearm is connected to a (any) crime the BATF can then use it's "industrial statistical" database to trace the gun from the manufacturer or importer to the distributor to the FFL dealer. The BATFE will then contact the dealer to obtain the name and particulars of the purchaser.
The BATFE maintains that because the industry reporting requirement predates the 1986 FOPA and that its use for tracing is not a violation of FOPA even though its use makes it a firearm registry in every sense.
Sounds like that's working out really well.
