The notion that the U.S. would ever engage in a military campaign to "utterly destroy" Iran is silly. Gates' comments should be viewed in that context.

If the U.S. didn't "utterly destroy" Afghanistan (or Saudi Arabia, for that matter) after 9/11, then it sure isn't going to do any such thing to Iran.
