ALGONA, Iowa --- A Minnesota teenager has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in the shooting deaths Monday night of convenience store clerks in Algona and Humboldt.

The suspect is identified as Michael Richard Swanson, 17, of St. Louis Park, Minn.

Vicky Bowman-Hall, 47, employed by Cenex in Algona, and Sheila Myers, 61, a clerk at the Kum & Go in Humboldt were identified as the two victims of the shootings, said Todd Holmes, Kossuth County Attorney at a news conference at 1 p.m. at Algona City Hall.

No hometowns of the victims are yet available.

According to Holmes, at about 9:05 p.m. a person wearing a ski mask entered the Cenex convenience store in Algona and demanded cash and cigarettes. Bowman-Hall, who was behind the register, complied with the request and was shot. She died of her injuries at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

At about 10 p.m. Monday, the same subject entered the Kum & Go convenience store at 1212 Eighth St., Humboldt, where he shot and killed cashier Myers. She died at the scene from her injuries.

Autopsies on both women will be performed at the State Medical Examiner's office in Ankeny.

Swanson has been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in both Kossuth and Humbuldt counties. He is being held in the Kossuth County Jail in Algona.

Holmes said he will be tried as an adult.

Assisting the Algona Police Department in the investigation are the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, the Kossuth County Sheriff's Department, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department, the Iowa State Patrol, the Webster City Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department.

I would not put money on that. I bet he gets 10 years or less.

Nope. He's in for life.

He's been charged as an adult with two counts of first degree murder, and there's absolutely no way the prosecutor cuts him a deal, and there's no way he gets acquitted. In Iowa a conviction on first degree murder means a mandatory sentence of life without parole.

You wrote: “Maybe their clerks should be armed.” (I still haven’t figured out how to italicize.)

Yes, I thought of that too.

To italicize text, enclose it in an I tag: Text to italicize

...produces: Text to italicize

Sociopaths have messed up brains. It can't be fixed by parenting.

Yeah, it happens. Harris and Klebold, for instance, came from stable families and both had siblings who turned out just fine.

Even good parents can have bad kids and I'm sure these parents are devastated.

If you are outraged now about this wrongful killing spree, you will really burn when some liberal federal appeals judge frees this punk on the theory that a 17 year old lacks the capacity to comprehend such a criminal act. After all those darn guys in black robes have already eliminated the death penalty and life, no release, for minors by saying this.

The parents have 2 older kids who have managed to not kill any one or make headlines.

Some people are just evil all on their own.

I saw the smirk on Fox9. Some of his comments indicates that he thinks this is all some kind of joke. OK, so Iowa has no death penalty. May this turd have a short hard life in prison.
He is a hard sociopath. Just think, it could have been worse. He could have become a politician (any guesses to which party?).
