Charlie Rangel: "As Clean as the Driven Snow."
by Chad Pergram | November 17, 2010
Rangel said he would pay the back taxes owed on the Caribbean vacation home and straighten out his House financial disclosure reports. And Rangel said he could explain the problem with the Congressional stationary. Plus, he argued he was on the right side of the law with the Manhattan apartments.
But the story churned. It soon brewed into a political maelstrom. And after weeks of charges and sparring with reporters, Rangel had had enough.
If people wanted to investigate him so badly, so be it. Rangel would let them take their best shot. And he would take the extraordinary step of referring himself to the House Ethics Committee to sort this all out.
So on July 31, 2008, I asked Rangel why anyone would throw himself at the mercy of House ethics investigators.
His response was brazen. Cocky. Boastful.
When youre as clean as the driven snow, no matter the accusations, just denying is not enough, Rangel answered.
The retort shocked me. Politicians usually answer in bland generalities. But this was emphatic. Declarative. And Ive also been around long enough to know when someone is tempting fate.
In other words, in Rangels mind, all of this was just a misunderstanding. The Ethics Committee would see this Rangels way. And then he could emerge from this nebula that clouded his Congressional career.
Some days earlier, news stories percolated about Rangels decision to throw himself at the mercy of the Ethics Committee. It was just a question of when Rangel would correspond with the Ethics Committee, begging for scrutiny.
This is where I come in.

He is as pure as the driven snow. Have you ever seeen snow that was driven on before?
Have you ever seen snow that has been driven on? It’s filthy dirty.
He may have been pure as the driven snow but I think he drifted ....(with thanks to Mae West)
What’s the lyric from “Betty Davis Eyes” - Pure as New York snow?
LOl!! Yellow Snow Charlie!!!
“As Clean as the Driven Snow....at Chernobyl...”
LOL - yeah, as long as a dog has recently lifted his leg on that snow, he is that clean.
Could not agree more on Romney. The guy is a weasel.
If Sarah Palin had said this, every media outlet would have corrected her.
Our lab did not leave the snow so clean when we lived in Syracuse. Yellow patches throughout the winter and a sh!t load of frozen dog poop to clean when the snow started melting. (My kids hated that job) So yeah, in that context Charlie is as clean as our snow.
He ain’t snow. He’s black ice.
Charlie Rangel: “As Clean as the Driven Snow.”
At least as clean as the wind driven road slush. But he is a credit to his party and his peer group, as he has conducted himself in the finest traditions of his organization. Barf, Barf, Barf, Barf.........and Barf!
Is snow “clean” if it is driven through unethical an possibly illegal actions? Rangel is a crook and probably should be in a small cell.
The only way charlie should spend more time with his family is if they are housed at Club Fed along with him.
I would say that snow has more then a few tire tracks on it!
Tax-cheat Charlie needs to spend more time in the state penitentiary.
“As Clean as the Driven Snow”...then he drifted.
“Pure as the driven snow” is a reference to wind driven snow. Wind driven snow is very pure. Snow that’s driven upon by a car is dirty and full of grease. I was making a pun.
Well, hush my mouth! Thanks for the correction.
I was thinking more along the lines of cold, slippery, a pain in the ass to deal with and causes damage.
