A teenager has given birth to triplets in Berlin after a medicine for cold treatments caused her contraceptive pill to fail.

The 17-year-old, identified only as 'Jennifer B', she is the youngest woman recorded in modern times in Germany successfully giving birth to three children.

She was taking the pill earlier this year when she went to the doctor suffering from a severe cold.

He prescribed her antibiotics, medication which nullified the effects of her contraceptives.

Of course, this is the Daily Mail, so I wouldn't rely upon the report without independent verification, but it's an interesting story nonetheless.

Sorry its true. Certain antibiotics and other medications can make the pill ineffective. This case is notable for the age of the mother and the number of babies, but the first fact is hardly noteable at all. Doctors either don’t warn women or maybe don’t really know, women don’t read all the available material. It happens quite often. Modern birth control pills are very low dose. If you are taking antibiotics you need additional forms of birth control. You should always ask if you are prescribed other medications.

Really, it wasn’t the cold medicine which caused her to have triplets.

Doris, 62, her grandmother, comforted her, saying; 'Don’t worry, we’ll manage without [the father]

Of course you will Doris. That's what the govt is for; raising illegitimate children.

Antibiotics for a cold? It sounds like the doctor doesn’t know the difference between a viral infection and a bacterial infection. (Or the writer doesn’t.) And if she was that sick, the randomly-chosen sex partner must have been pretty desperate.

In summary, it’s a shame the infants can’t be adopted by an appropriate married couple.

She must have taken Triple C;

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is an over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressant commonly found in cold medications. It goes by CCC.

Jenny went on; 'Their father is 22. I met him through an Internet chat room last year. When we made love in his apartment he was so romantic – he lit candles all over the place and spoke soft words into my ear. 'But when I told him about the babies he screamed, "You’re kidding me. Get rid of them!" His words were like blows against my naked skin.'

The writer doesn't. She probably had a secondary infection as a result of the cold -- either a sinus infection or a bronchial infection.

And if she was that sick, the randomly-chosen sex partner must have been pretty desperate.

Antibiotics are usually prescribed long enough to make sure that the infection is completely eliminated. The patient appears to be well (and feels well), but there can be some remaining bacteria.

That's one of the ways that bacteria mutates into an antibiotic-resistant strain: the patient thinks they are fine and stop taking the medication prematurely. Then, the resurgent infection requires a different antibiotic.

Idiots like this should be spayed when they hit puberty.

There was a time in this world, that a western country wouldn’t be fixated on the fact that her contraception failed, but on the fact that an unmarried seventeen year old was having casual sex with a man.

How we have fallen.

Amen. If a condition of accepting welfare was requiring recipients to be permanently spayed or neutered, we'd save so much money in the long run not having to pay for all the problems caused by illegitimacy.

The text that comes with birth control pills says that antibiotics can reduce their effectiveness. Doctors tell women to think of themselves as not on the pill if they’re using antibiotics.

This is entirely her fault. Luckily she lives in Germany where dumb liability lawsuits are not looked upon kindly by the courts, and as such few lawyers are willing to take them.

Straight out, she’ll get kindergeld, 558 Euros per month for the kids. But that is meant to encourage the wife in a traditional home to stay home with the kids rather than going back to work by easing the economic impact of not going back to work.

fading memories of 10th. grade biology class compel me to ask....if the common cold is a viral infection, why exactly are we prescribing antibiotics?
