WASHINGTON – Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.

The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

I suspect many of them are unemployable in an Obama economy. We need a restoration of growth so that jobs trickle down to the weakest members of the labor force. Make the Bush tax cuts permanent and extend the unemployment benefits for a fixed period to let the economy grow. Employment will not gain significantly until Obama gives up his socialist agenda. That may not happen until 2012.

“His wife works so he tells us it cheaper for him to stay at home and watch the kids then to go to work. Plus he gets paid for staying at home.”

Of course it’s cheaper, especially if you’re getting paid for it (even a pittance).

If he has young children, it COSTS to “watch” them no matter which approach you take. If he wasn’t doing it, then they’d be paying through the nose for day care. It all pretty much evens out, no matter what you do.

Every time I walk into Lowes there is a huge sign about 5 feet by 6 feet saying they are hiring. There are plenty of jobs, just not the big pay little work jobs that people prefer.

This is risky... What you do is not extend during news of job growth or through some type of incentive for businesses to create new jobs (tax cuts). By just doing this outright...it could easily backfire on the GOP and the Dems will have a field day.

You do the right thing and let the chips fall where they may.

I know exactly how bad things are in LIBERAL areas, and the voters had a chance to throw the commie bums out in those areas, and most decided to keep the losers.

On the other hand, there are plenty of jobs in conservative areas of the country. They may not be the union jobs that overpay high school dropouts by about $50,000 a year for doing nothing, but they are jobs that will put food in your mouth until something better comes along.

So I suggest voting with your feet and moving to a conservative state, just remember to leave your liberal voting history behind when you get here, because we don't need any more liberals screwing up our states.

People need to know that they can and should work at McDonalds to support their family if need be. I

People not having a job is not their own fault.

Your a jack, plain and simple.

Mcdonalds doesn't support anyone's family.

We want jobs. Thats what the people want. Not Mcdonalds.

You honestly think there are plenty of jobs out there? I have no problem doing away with unemployment if jobs are created.

To say because of unemployment NO jobs are being created is just plain stupid.

Have you been eating paint chips?

We are still losing jobs. This is the fault of the economy, not the people.

You are wrong. In fact , ALL,100% of Senate Republicans voted against the democrats’ Government Healthcare and the Dream act and other socialist bills from the democrats/Marxists. LOOK IT UP. McConnell has been almost perfect. Yet puppets of the liberal media still bash him and Republicans.

See, the liberal media bashes Republicans and people don't even know the votes or ANYTHING.

Case in point look at all the people who vote for democrats/socialism which is voting for the U.S.’s demise and thus their own demise

Texas is doing pretty well compared to other states. A lot of home improvement and building supply places are dying up here, with some of the local places downright scared, with too many empty parking spaces.

Granted, the big pay for little work jobs are gone and not coming back. And most of them were just paper-shuffling b*llsh*t, anyway.

that’s all right to the still employed “compassionate conservatives” of Free Republic.

It's a proven fact that half of all people in the world are idiots ... the same is true at Free Republic ...

Remember this: if the Republicans would listen to some posters here on FR all the time, they would be a minority party FOREVER.

The Republicans have been elected to fix the economy, if this isn't accomplished they will be voted out next election.

I work at a large software company in Redmond, WA where we have 4 - 5 thousand job openings at any given time. Problem is we can’t find the people with the experience, skills and education needed to fill them.

I have been out of work since late May.

So, rake leaves, mow lawns, work at McDonald's. You cannot expect society to pick up the tab for your personal failures. This is a free-market-loving community. Work within that context. NO SOCIALISM!

Your full of it, as there are practically NO jobs, not even crap jobs.

One sign says now hiring, how many posistions? 1? 2? The millions of jobs that people are out of?

That is why the Democrats lost the election, no jobs. To quote the idiot Carville, “It’s about the economy” stupid.

The Republicans have been elected to fix the economy . . .

Government cannot 'fix' the economy. They can only fix the government's drain on the economy. The Republicans have been elected to fix government - not the economy. One major task will be to get the government the hell out of the way of entrepreneurs and wealth-creators.

he problem is, well I dunno how many people are doing this.

Yes, everybody that is on unemployment has a second unreported job. There are NO jobs, hence why the Republicans just were reelected. Do you follow the news?

Honestly? If you believe that, I got a bridge for sale at a good price in Brooklyn.

I’ll stay away from Nevada.Nevada, that shows what democrats and their created underclass of illegals and corrupt union thugs will do to state. Unbelievable they managed to get Reid elected. I know democrats cheated but still anyone who would vote for this democrat Reid has got to have the intelligence of a vegetable.

Personal failures for losing a job during an economic downturn? Are you stupid? Ignorant?

Good post.

My argument remains that unemployment benefits, as distasteful as they may be, are required in this economy for as long as it takes. Not only does it keep millions of people from starving, I strongly suspect that terminating benefits (right now) will effect everyone, as a major stimulus to the entire economy will be gone.

I'm not saying that unemployment benefits should be extended for ever, just until the economy recovers, which contrary to the MSM beliefs, hasn't happened.

Government has created a huge mess. Through their over regulation and anti-capitalist policies, they have extended a recession which would have healed itself by now, and put us in a depression.

The criticisms of those who blame the victims here are misguided and should be instead aimed at the cause. For if the Government stays on this course, instead of 1 in 5 being unemployed, we could be looking at 1 in 2.

When you get hungry enough you will be amazed at how many jobs you will suddenly “find”

My experience over my lifetime has shown when people are receiving unemployment either from the government or in the form of a severance package, that they stay unemployed as long as the money they are receiving keeps coming in.

I remember a family member who got laid off from a technology company years ago. He swung by the house to tell us he had lost his job, we expressed concern... but he said no big deal he had 2 YEARS to find another job before his severance pay ran out. As soon as he left, I turned to my wife and said “I will bet you dollars to donuts he doesn't get another job for a least 2 years” and ....

I was right.

He lived off that severance for exactly 2 years, and then SUDDENLY found a job! shocking!

lol

You see, conservatives see that world how is actually is, not how we would LIKE it to be. And I know human nature, and knowing human nature... I know that most people are LAZY. Knowing that most people are lazy, it becomes quite easy to predict their behavior. If you provide for someones every NEED for X amount of time, they will sit on their lazy butts until X amount of time is up.

It's that simple.
