Working by the rules got us nothing. Oh, wait - it got us OBAMA. It got us a huge pile of Wall Street and Big Government giving loans to nobodies until the system snapped - I played by the rules, saved to buy a tiny little house that I fixed up and sold off to get a better one. The rules won, paco. They sold us all down the river floating paper to nobodies and mortgages written on TP. All those good, law-abiding risk taking hard workers shifting into overdrive in unpaid for SUVs and loading up the unpaid credit cards.
I didn’t work in real estate, finance or for the UAW. I got handed a pink slip just the same. Nothing I did contributed to this mess - and I was left with the cleanup.
Oh, I did get that low paying job and I kept (as I always have) it all in check. But just like under Jimmah Carter I went to work for myself too.
As far as I’m concerned they can shut down the government.
Like a lot of people I’m not worthy of a real statistic.
Good for the Republicans however they don’t own the majority until January. That means Nancy’s Democrats that she led to slaughter had to have bailed on her. LOL
I’d like to thank everyone on this thread. I have been out of work since late May. Though I have applied to nearly 200 positions - all of which I’m either greatly or vastly over qualified for - and this has yielded just two interviews with no offer, I see here that I’ve got it all wrong. The unemployment check - which is half of my salary and which I’ve contributed to my entire working life, has held me back. Thank goodness this madness is coming to an end. I look forward to the coming weeks when my original 26 weeks runs out and I cannot pay my bills. Then and only then, will I get back to work. Unemployment will be 2%. I will no longer be a bum. And with magic similar to hope and change, I will be back to work. Because, we’ll, that’s how easy it is. Thanks so much everyone!
Clever trick for them to stop it in December. Then they can do all the news stories about how people are dying in the streets on Christmas & it’s all the republicans fault
Shameful thread! The US spends trillions to pay for benefits of dictators in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Holy Land of Africa, but that’s all right to the still employed “compassionate conservatives” of Free Republic. Outta sight outta mind.
I don’t understand why they don’t give them community service. Make them work for those benefits. Why give something for nothing?
Ok.. so can someone bring me up to speed. The AP was so worried about getting out the message that a severely outnumbered GOP “blocked” the bill, and how much money they were taking out of the pocket of the unemployed, that they didn’t define “extened” unemployed. I don’t believe these are the 99’ers are they? There have been so many extensions that I have no idea how many weeks unemployed these folks are.. Little help...
They are going to get painted as “MOP” (Mean Old Republicans) again just before Christmas. They need to offer a deal to the administration and the Democrats. Funding for NPR or a 6 month unemployment extension and let them choose.
As we heard ad nauseum in “Historic” ‘08, “Democrats hold a supermajority in congress”. The GOP is incapable of blocking ANYTHING.
I suspect many of them are unemployable in an Obama economy. We need a restoration of growth so that jobs trickle down to the weakest members of the labor force. Make the Bush tax cuts permanent and extend the unemployment benefits for a fixed period to let the economy grow. Employment will not gain significantly until Obama gives up his socialist agenda. That may not happen until 2012.
The headline is total bull...the GOP can’t block anything in the House...
You honestly think there are plenty of jobs out there? I have no problem doing away with unemployment if jobs are created.
To say because of unemployment NO jobs are being created is just plain stupid.
Have you been eating paint chips?
We are still losing jobs. This is the fault of the economy, not the people.
You can only pay people just so long to NOT WORK before you run out of other peoples money.
I heard it’s up to 99 weeks now with only 52 weeks in a year.
I thought they would approve it if unspent stimulus money was used? I don’t think it is an outright block. Which they can’t even do right now anyway since the Dems still control both the house and Senate until the end of the year.
The republicans don’t mind the extension; they just want it paid for with stimulus funds... They still lack the gumption to say NO MORE.

This thread is exhibit A of that maxim.
