St. Louis tops list of most dangerous US cities
AP ^ | November 21, 2010

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — St. Louis overtook Camden, N.J., as the nation's most dangerous city in 2009, according to a national study released Sunday.

The study by CQ Press found St. Louis had 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 429.4. That helped St. Louis beat out Camden, which topped last year's list and was the most dangerous city for 2003 and 2004.

Detroit, Flint, Mich., and Oakland, Calif., rounded out the top five. For the second straight year, the safest city with more than 75,000 residents was Colonie, N.Y.

The annual rankings are based on population figures and crime data compiled by the FBI. Some criminologists question the findings, saying the methodology is unfair.

Greg Scarbro, unit chief of the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, said the FBI also discourages using the data for these types of rankings.

Mostly feral Black males.

I don't know which group will destroy this country first, Muzlims or Black males?

I worked for a corp. that was based in St. Louis. From the top down management wise with maybe one exception out of the dozen or so I had to deal with, all crooked as they come. There are a lot of other choice descriptions but I don’t want to get kicked off of here.

Do a “Wykipedia” on the cities listed above and look at the demographics. Then, look up the safest cities using the same data base and look at the demographics. You cannot argue with the facts. Check it out!!

Most large urban areas are dangerous if you are a goof and wander around where you shouldn't. In a crappy neighborhood the people living their will if they are wise have bars on the windows and a shotgun. I don't think anybody despises lazy thieving scumbags more then those who have to live with them.

None of this garbage was tolerated before the 1960s. Now it’s open season in every major city and we’re not allowed to do anything about it. Except flee for the exurbs and watch the miscreants follow us out 10 years later.

Maybe putting the car in “R” isn’t such a bad idea after all. Running away from the problem gets us nowhere.

"Crime is based on a variety of factors. It's based on geography, it's based on poverty, it's based on the economy," Van Ross said.

NO, crime is based on ONE factor: morals. If what Van Ross said were true, crime rates would have been super high during the Depression, but they were not because people still had their morals even though they were poor.

But there is no way they beat Camden.

These statistics are, of course, for St. Louis CITY, not for the entire metropolitan area. I live in St. Louis COUNTY, which is distinct from St. Louis CITY. In the last 50-60 years, St. Louis City has lost TWO-THIRDS of its population. Guess which demographic has moved out and which has remained.

That said, MUCH of St. Louis City is perfectly safe. Downtown is generally safe. It is the NORTH SIDE OF THE CITY that is EXTREMELY dangerous. As in all cities, wherever a certain unnamed demographic exceeds a certain percentage of a given neighborhood, there is an increased danger of violent crime. And so, as in all cities, you have to know your neighborhoods. (I grew up in the city of Chicago, in a perfectly safe neighborhood, no crime whatsoever.)

There are safe neighborhoods in St. Louis, and there are dangerous ones. You have to know which is which. I am not at all afraid to go downtown or to south city or midtown or the west end. I do stay out of the north side, but then, there is no reason for me to go there.

I get a kick out of the magazines and articles pointing out the best places to retire. They neglect to show some are democrat strongholds. Moving a lifetime's worth of possessions and ending up in a hellhole would be a very serious tactical error. Living among like-minded people (for the most part) is a factor they NEVER consider.

East St. Louis has nothing to do with this story. It is across the river, in Illinois, and not within the city limits of St. Louis. And East St St. Louis does not meet the population minum to qualify for these rankings.

Yes, East St. Louis is a hellhole, but it is the north side of the city of St. Louis that makes St. Louis the violent crime capital--although, as I say, much of St. Louis is perfectly safe. The crime is concentrated in certain "ethnic" neighborhoods.

One common ‘denominator’and it has nothing to do with the economy. Memphis and Atlanta should be higher on the list. If you break down certain areas you would be safer in Iraq or Afghanistan.

First off East ST. Louis is in Illinois and has been a rough place for decades. I live in the Benton Park area and it is fairly safe and so is the Soulard area. Street crime is down all over since we can legally pack heat. Most of the crime is personal or gang related.

I agree, sir. I’ve been downtown to a Cardinal game this season - perfectly safe and new Busch Stadium is a wonderful venue. I’m also a Rams fan and have stayed at various downtown hotels to attend games at the Ed. My wife and I love the blues and hit Soulard as often as we can. The food on the Hill - both Italian and German - is some of the best we’ve had anywhere. With all that said, and as you pointed out, we don’t venture north of the Eddy - ever, ever, ever.

My former boss had a brother who was an East St. Louis police officer 10 years ago. The city was so broke they could not afford ammunition for the officers’ weapons - they bought their own or did without. ESTL is the city of plywood windows and isn’t safe during the daytime, much less at night.

How many were raised without fathers married to and supporting their mothers? Unmarried childbearing, incentivized by the precepts of the Great Society, has produced destructive consequences. Rev. MLK,Jr., opined that LBJ’s Great Society would destroy what remained of the black family.

I remember watching some piece on Camden years ago. An RC priest
was complaining that the new sewage plant was going in
Camdem, and he said something like "...and I can see them all
smiling, flushing their toilets, sending their "cr@p" to Camden..."

I was thinking, you have a useful construction project going in,
that will continue to provide decent paying jobs, and you're
complaining?

I bet it raised property values in the area.
