'I made a mistake': Al Gore's U-turn on corn ethanol as he admits the food-vs-fuel competition is real

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said support for corn-based ethanol in the United States was 'not a good policy', weeks before tax credits are up for renewal.
U.S. blending tax breaks for ethanol make it profitable for refiners to use the fuel even when it is more expensive than gasoline. The credits are up for renewal on December 31.
Total U.S. ethanol subsidies reached $7.7billion last year according to the International Energy Industry, which said biofuels worldwide received more subsidies than any other form of renewable energy. 'It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for (U.S.) first generation ethanol,' said Mr Gore, speaking at a green energy business conference in Athens sponsored by Marfin Popular Bank.
'First generation ethanol I think was a mistake. The energy conversion ratios are at best very small.

Seems like it would be more newsworthy if Al Gore had a credible position on anything.

Of course a mistake has been made, Al Gore didn't invest heavily enough in ethanol, so he wants the US to switch that subsidy to second and third generation ethanol creation, which his company would be happy to do a demonstration on. Of course, with such an emerging technology, unlike ethanol, which pretty much anyone can produce, this will require a higher subsidy...
It's how the Green Mafia operates. Invest out a technology, then make the government turn it into something profitable, and then pocket the money, perhaps investing it in the next scam on Joe Taxpayer.

Anyone doubt that Algore is a true idiot?? Food prices are rising and many people are having to cut down on their consumption of corn because we are driving with it. Never mind the fact that biofuels have been shown to cause MORE pollution than just fossil fuels. What's that you say, Al??

Al Gore is on a par with Michael Moore. Both got adulation from Eurotrash aka “intellectuals.” Al Gore got Nobel Peace Prize, and Michael Moore got grand prize at Cannes Film Festival.

Interesting note on ethanol production. Only oil from the corn is used. Farmers are buying the residual corn meal like left overs to feed cattle, it is high in protein!

In researching this story elsewhere I found the following quote from Al Gore's speech. This one should make Drudge. Gore attributes his own misguided support for the original program to being blinded by his own presidential ambitions.
"One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee, and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for president."
