SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea bombarded a South Korean island near their disputed western border Tuesday, setting buildings ablaze and killing at least two marines and injuring 16 others after warning the South to halt military drills in the area, South Korean officials said.
South Korea said it returned fire and scrambled fighter jets in response, and said the "inhumane" attack on civilian areas violated the 1953 armistice halting the Korean War. The two sides technically remain at war because a peace treaty was never negotiated.

Why does this not make me warm and fuzzy....
Whoof. Not exactly what our powder-keg world needs, right now.
Any idea how common this sort of thing is? Is this rare, or are there skirmishes like this often?
Bush did it.
I say 2 marines dead equals N korea nuked..pop em, screw China..
I agree...although they are not far from the ‘stone age’ culturally...I say we bomb them all the way back to the ‘stone age’.
I guess that is terrible of me...but if N. Korea would just mind its own business, live and let live...I would not think such thoughts.
Even as we speak, Obama is standing in front of a full-length mirror...practicing his bowing.
Time to go Roman on them. “for every soldier that is killed we will destroy one city in return” I see two NK cities as potential smoking holes...
Barry’s ticked—somebody woke him up at 3 am for this.
Marines? Like U.S. Marines?
If this is so, I don’t see how this isn’t an act of war.
QUICK! send Hillary!!!!!
Sad how being born in North Korea sets you back 100 years....
No. This sh*t happens when we project weakness.
Never happen under Reagan or Bush...
just another one of the downsides of electing a democrat.
I’m sure Obama is writing his apology speech right now...
Obama’s on top of this. He’s on the phone right now telling the ROK President not to criticize Obama on TV.
It’s 3AM, Hussein.
They were ROK(Republis of Korea)Marines, not US Marines.
Doesn’t say whether it was ROK Marines or US Marines.
In any event, the Norks kill a few US military from time to time and have ever since 1953.
We do nothing.
I think you’re forgetting who is in the White house...
I think you’re forgetting who is in the White house...
At least 100 years. I hear tell that people are on the menu regularly in NK.
S Korean Marines.
Yeah, he had finally managed to drift off to sleep on the floor when some inconsiderate staffer came to tell him about this.
Just a point of clarification.
They are technically still at war because they operate under a truce.
It is not that the peace was not negotiated, it is because a treaty has never formally been signed.
Just like we are technically not at war with terrorists because the Congress never declared a state of war.
Neither “technical” situation matters much, as dead soldiers are dead soldiers.
Odumbo was not woken up for this he slept in and the WH had a spokesman speak on his behalf Here is the text of the speech
Ummmmmmm Uhhhhhh, Ahhhhhh, Ummmmmm, and Uhhhhh. That is it Folks.
remember that is the Charlie brown Teacher version 3.0.
Odumbo has specific orders do not wake me up unless something significant happens - republicans die enmass, sarah palin is in airplane accident or Bristol Palin is kicked off DWTS. other than those three issues I repeat do not wake me for anything.
Not including trading shots pretty much daily across the DMZ, just this year the Norks have sunk a South Korean warship and now killed two Marines in an unprovoked attack on an island in South Korea. Oh, also announced this week: they now have over 2000 modern centrifuges for enriching uranium to weapons grade level. Up until a few days ago it was thought that the Norks only had a plutonium program, or at least that is what the Obamalamadingdong Administration is saying......
However, the United Nations Security Council will probably put off holding the emergency meeting until after the American Thanksgiving holidays. A UNSC spokesman mentions...
"Out of respect, we hesitate to intrude on Thanksgiving, one of America's most important holidays. We feel confident that the celebration of freedom and giving in America far outweighs this minor disturbance in the Koreas. And then, we should probably consider that Christmas is not too far around the corner. Not to mention New Years Eve/Day. With all of this occuring in the near future, it could be as late as next year before we actually get to having a meeting concerning the...ur...what were we talking about again?"
South Korea just announced that if they are attacked again, they will really get mad.
Because you know like I do that our leadership is weak?
Fox just called this the most aggressive act in 50 years, at least I think that’s what they said (I was in the other room).
“Never before in mankind has the malice of the wicked been outweighed by the complacency of the virtuous.” Winston Churchill 1945 speaking about how preventable WW II was.
I know you are right..
When the going gets tough, the fluff go golfing.
Read the whole article before posting?
Very rare that they actually send shells across, Maybe I am forgetful, but I think in my Lifetime, I am 55,one or two accounts of a rifle shot, never remember the sinking of a south Korean warship, there was the taking of a spy ship many years ago, but that I think was Russia, but to shell the base for operating in national waters, should require at least an attempt to decapitate N, Korea’s leadership.
So let me get this straight.... There is a potential crisis developing overseas, but since a holiday is coming up, they are going to wait??? Look I’m for all celebrating holidays as the next guy, but I think trying to defuse a crisis from getting worse is more important imho...
and the UN is a overpriced debating club..
Sorry, the UPDATE was a joke...I shoulda included < cynicism on/off > prompts...
yeah, what a joke.
If you can sink a SK warship and murder 47 of its sailors why wouldn’t you think yoy could fire artillery with impunity. Nobody in powe today has the will or the balls to stand up to these communist animals.
There's a cynicism off command?
ROK Marines may, and I say MAY have a tougher boot camp than US Marines do.
