SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea bombarded a South Korean island near their disputed western border Tuesday, setting buildings ablaze and killing at least two marines and injuring 16 others after warning the South to halt military drills in the area, South Korean officials said.

South Korea said it returned fire and scrambled fighter jets in response, and said the "inhumane" attack on civilian areas violated the 1953 armistice halting the Korean War. The two sides technically remain at war because a peace treaty was never negotiated.

I say 2 marines dead equals N korea nuked..pop em, screw China..

Good luck. Not with Obama at the helm. No way. Not a chance. South Korea will be lucky if Obama does little more than a Monty Python skit:

"Stop or I'll say Stop again!"

Just a point of clarification.

They are technically still at war because they operate under a truce.

It is not that the peace was not negotiated, it is because a treaty has never formally been signed.

Just like we are technically not at war with terrorists because the Congress never declared a state of war.

Neither “technical” situation matters much, as dead soldiers are dead soldiers.

Any idea how common this sort of thing is? Is this rare, or are there skirmishes like this often?

Well, if you remember, NK sunk a SK ship a few months ago.

Not including trading shots pretty much daily across the DMZ, just this year the Norks have sunk a South Korean warship and now killed two Marines in an unprovoked attack on an island in South Korea. Oh, also announced this week: they now have over 2000 modern centrifuges for enriching uranium to weapons grade level. Up until a few days ago it was thought that the Norks only had a plutonium program, or at least that is what the Obamalamadingdong Administration is saying......

The United Nations Security Council could hold an emergency meeting in the next day or two over the attack, saying "It's in the works for either today or tomorrow. We are for it and planning is ongoing," Reuters reports.

UPDATE:

However, the United Nations Security Council will probably put off holding the emergency meeting until after the American Thanksgiving holidays. A UNSC spokesman mentions...

"Out of respect, we hesitate to intrude on Thanksgiving, one of America's most important holidays. We feel confident that the celebration of freedom and giving in America far outweighs this minor disturbance in the Koreas. And then, we should probably consider that Christmas is not too far around the corner. Not to mention New Years Eve/Day. With all of this occuring in the near future, it could be as late as next year before we actually get to having a meeting concerning the...ur...what were we talking about again?"

Yes, actually it does very specifically state that they were "South Korean Marines."
