Former Santorum Staffer Plans to Challenge Casey

A Pennsylvania lawyer and former Hill staffer announced that he intends to take on Sen. Bob Casey in 2012, the Allentown Morning Call reported Tuesday.
Marc Scaringi worked on the successful Senate campaign of Rick Santorum in 1994 and then as a legislative assistant for the Pennsylvania Republican in 1995 and 1996, according to Scaringi’s profile on his law firm’s website.
“We have a President and his allies in Congress who are trying to transform an independent, prosperous people into dependents and wards of the government,” Scaringi said in his statement Tuesday announcing his intention to run against the Pennsylvania Democrat. “Casey is one of those.”
He also aligned himself with the tea party, saying it is “the best thing to happen to the Republican Party since Reagan changed his voter registration from Democrat to Republican and became our nation’s 40th president.”
“But it’s as a business owner that I’m seeing first-hand how out of hand Washington has become in creating policy that is harming free enterprise here in Pennsylvania,” he said in his statement.
Scaringi opened the law firm of Scaringi & Scaringi with his wife, Melanie Walz Scaringi, in 2005.

Sounds good. The last guy we need is another Washington politician. He has two years to make himself known to PA voters. And Casey, with his liberal voting record, is eminently beatable.
Lawyer? No thanks, we have enough of those already in DC.
I don’t see a crowded GOP primary at the moment. That may change.
I don’t like the way this guy is trying to latch on to the Tea Party movement by saying he supports them.
Astute candidates would run on their principles and wait for the Tea Party to coalesce behind them.
This approach smacks of opportunism and makes me wary.
Casey is such an empty suit that even the most dimly aware PA voters are now having a lot of doubts about him.
I think maintaining an earmarks ban could be key here.
Generally the way Democrat scoundrels in this state hang onto their jobs is by generously spreading the pork, and then successfully taking credit amongst the Yellow Dogs for any who still have jobs. If there is no pork to be had, he is toast.
The so-called “true conservatives” will be here shortly to brand him RINO.
I’m hearing rumors that my Congresscritter, Tim Murphy (PA-18) is thinking of taking Casey on.
There was a guy. Mark Schweiker, who was Lt. Governor and was instrumental in the Que Creek mine rescue a few years ago.
He struck me as a very attractive potential candidate.
Anybody know what happened to him?
Schweiker was acting governor from ‘01-’02 after Ridge was tapped to be the head of Homeland Security. He didn’t run for Gov. against Rendell in ‘02, although polls showed he would have had a good shot at winning. I believe one of the reasons given at the time was that he had young children at home.
He was Pres. and CEO of the Greater Phila. Chamber of Commerce from ‘03-’09, then resigned that to become Pres. of Philadelphia area pharmaceutical manufacturer PRWT as President of business process outsourcing.
He’s only 57 and was very popular, so he might be a great choice. By now, his children should be grown up, I’d think. I’d like to see him in the mix, but don’t know where he fits on a conservative scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most).

Agreed. We need a stronger candidate than this gentleman.

Also agreed. There was much of this in the last primary. Some candidates used the tea party when they didn’t receive a Republican Party endorsement. Sadly, many in the Tea Party movement were oblivious.
