Taxpayers must cover most of a $55.3 million settlement approved Tuesday by Cook County to compensate as many as 250,000 people who were strip searched at the county jail, often in mass lineups and even if they were detained for charges as minor as traffic violations.
Some of the degrading practices included strip searches of dozens of men at a time--continued until 2009, years after the county paid out $6.8 million for a similar case filed by women, lawyers for the plaintiffs said.
It was insanity for people . . . to assume that you could do one thing to females and get sued, but you could do the same thing to males and not get sued, said Commissioner Earlean Collins, D-Chicago.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has defended strip searches as necessary for jail security, while working to improve the procedures.
But that was not the case for as many as 250,000 peoplemost of them menwho were searched between Jan. 30, 2004 and March 19, 2009, when the last of the machines went on-line.
The many lawyers in the case will get $15 million of the settlement money, Driscoll said. The rest will go into the fund to compensate former detainees.

Children and grandparents at airports no problem!
We all pay a heavy price to buy votes for democrats.
and tell me how much TSA and JNapi will be fined??????????
They were just practicing to be TSA agents.
No comment regarding the TSA is necessary.
And what crime are these people at airports being charged with?
These are American TAXPAYING CITIZENS who have rights against illegal searches and I can't think of a more blatant violation of the US Constitution in recent memory.
Taxpayers are now going to pay $50 million to the Lawyers, and the Plaintiffs will each recieve a $10 off coupon towards their next parking ticket.
Is this a great country, or what?
What fine was given to the ACTUAL PARTIES (the cops who did the search)? Answer: NONE....they don't have deep pockets.
No one forces someone to get into a checkpoint line that has been set up between the entrance to the airport and the boarding ramps for airplanes, and apparently, revoking the voluntary aspect comes with a 11 thousand dollar fine.
Somehow, I don't think a judge is really going to be amused if this ever comes before a bench to decide.

Follow the money. Bet it doesn’t get to very many ‘former detainees’.
Let me guess, every single person up to the county commissioners who was involved in this has lost their job and lost every iota of their pensions because of their misuse of power in the public arena.
The actual parties - including whoever authorized this - should effing be in jail for violation of civil rights under color of law.
Until that starts happening, this cr@p won’t stop.
Take it out of the county administrators/commissioners pensions. Take all of it and then some.
Run the numbers, do we know how many lawyers split the 15 million? While 250,000 detainees get their share of 40 million. $160.00 each. I think a few detainees are going to be extremely PO’d.

The Cook County Jail. Just the right amount of wrong.
Exactly right - First, everyone from the top down should be fired that is assoicated with this jail and courthouse - Next, all pensions should be taken...and then all of this money needs to come OUT of an already existing budgets. Do with less until this is paid off.
To ensure no one confuses members of one group with those of the other group, all those Holder specifies as being with “da man” are expected to wear white armbands with a big red target on them.
And it is undoubtedly a FACT that most of the plaintiffs really are CRIMINALS!! Yet law abiding citizens are strip searched by TSA every day!! Criminals could make a real killing if they just invested in plane tickets rather than screwdrivers!
So thats 1/3rd, about 5 million, for the lawyers...all 3 or 4 of them.
And 10 million for 250 thousand people, which comes to 40 bucks per person.
Just because Congress or an Executive Order declares a felony to be suddenly a harmless requirement, doesn't make it so.
Last I heard, the S8upreme Court of the land is the next to last final authority.
We, the people (the people who actually work, pay taxes and actually suppport the government,) get the final word.
The trial lawyers assn makes certain the DNC is well funded.
