The US embassy cables are marked "Sipdis" – secret internet protocol distribution. They were compiled as part of a programme under which selected dispatches, considered moderately secret but suitable for sharing with other agencies, would be automatically loaded on to secure embassy websites, and linked with the military's Siprnet internet system.

They are classified at various levels up to "secret noforn" [no foreigners]. More than 11,000 are marked secret, while around 9,000 of the cables are marked noforn.

Not clear yet whether all of the Wikileaks material came from the one known traitor Manning, but apparently much (or all?) of the State Dept. materials may have been accessible on various military computers as an inter-departmental info program. So that does begin to address the possibility that it all came from Manning, although of course it would require an exhaustive access and review of details to confirm anything like that. Still, I haven't seen anything to indicate that other traitors are involved - it MIGHT all have come from Manning..... who should be executed (do we still do that anymore???).

Manning deserves the needle.

On the other hand, what I’ve seen is nothing that other people haven’t been saying.

For the nature , breadth , and depth this leaking goes WELL beyond the one guy. It has intentionally compromised the security of the US and many western nations. The focus is the US. This one runs up all the pole and into the White House. Someone has their own WikedGate affair.

"do we still do that anymore?"

That's a decision every individual is free to make.

I am not sure what to think about all this.

Obviously, I think whoever was involved should be punished to the full extent of the law.

On the other hand, I am not sure that it doesn’t have the ability to turn out to be a good thing in the end — shedding light on all the crap that gets swept under the carpet and all the lies our politicians and the media feed us.

Well there may be some ‘helpful’ revelations but I think this has to be devastating to our diplomatic, intel, and military relations with many govts and officials around the world.

Even putting aside life-and-death issues for a moment, there are loads of foreign officials who are now seriously embarrassed in their own media and regional media, for one thing. Anyone who’s had confidential conversations reported in these docs, or who is referred to as a third-party in unflattering ways, now may really hate the USA or at least refrain from cooperating with us on intel and sensitive issues.

Diplomats and politicians tend to be very vain, sensitive, narcissistic individuals.... many of them will really *hate* the source(s) of this embarrassment — US diplomatic and military officials who have said harsh things which are now trumpeted around in their media.

Again, I’m not even talking about the more serious life-or-death problems that are arising (such as whether Yemen or Pakistan may pull the plug on all cooperation in the war on jihadists), but simply the variety of foreign officials who will now have more reasons to avoid working well with the USA in the future.

White House. Someone has their own WikedGate affair.

There's a beauty.

Pfc Brad Manning is taking one-for-the-team for Obama’s plan to destroy America. Manning is gay per internet research.

I suspect that it is Obama or someone high up in his administration who is leaking all of this information (With zero’s approval).

All five Newpapers that have been select to receive the WikiLeaks] plan to publish extracts from the most significant cables, but have decided neither to "dump" the entire dataset into the public domain, nor to publish names that would endanger innocent individuals. WikiLeaks says that, contrary to the state department's fears, it also initially intends to post only limited cable extracts, and to redact identities.

Limited extracts? Who decides which leaks are more equal than other leaks. We cannot afford to have a limited leak gap.

Okay, I'll begin by saying I may be off base with this assumption, but I am wondering if this is how Nobama finally rids himself of Hillary Clinton (without the fear of her reemerging as Presidential candidate in 2012).

Fact is, this is occurring on his (and her) watch. She has been on an active campaign this past week to soften the blow by contacting various governments and forewarning them of the impending fallout when the memos are released.

She is drawing a lot of attention to herself ...and her incompetence.

Could this be Obamao’s “excuse” for starting to close down websites? What better excuse than “national security”?

Exactly. This administration won’t prosecute anyone who tries to harm America. If a few of these traitors, and that includes congress people, were tried and executed for treason if found guilty, I don’t think we’d have this problem

Hmmm. Interesting. What if it wasn’t the WH, but Hillary and Co. that will not let this disaster go to waste, showing how she may just save the day. What if she does keep the channels open? We all know that the CIC is not respected anywhere, but this may be Hillary’s chance to shine.

Diplomacy is a lot like bargaining, is it not? Both sides know things, both sides have goals.

Another problem is this is just a fraction of what is going to be leaked. Hey. If the nations all get together and kick us out, more power to them. We’ll have to concentrate on our own borders.

Most of what has been released is, in effect, "open" secrets. Its known that the US government is not very impressed with British PM David Cameron. It's known that Sarkozy has a short fuse to match his short stature and its known that the German foreign minister has little substance to his thinking (i.e. he's dense).

Likewise, it's known that most Middle East countries don't have much use for Iran and would like strong action to be taken against them. It's known that Israel is contemplating taking such action if the US doesn't. It's known that the US spies on other nations, including its allies, in the UN. Hell, EVERY nation spies on everyone else in the UN - it would have been a shock if that were NOT true.

The diffference, of course, is that these thoughts can now be seen on official, US Government printed paper.
