For Democrats in the South, the most ominous part of a disastrous year may not be what happened on Election Day but what has happened in the weeks since.
After suffering a historic rout in which nearly every white Deep South Democrat in the U.S. House was defeated and Republicans took over or gained seats in legislatures across the region the partys ranks in Dixie have thinned even further.
In Georgia, Louisiana and Alabama, Democratic state legislators have become Republicans, concluding that there is no future in the party that once dominated the so-called Solid South.
That the old Confederacy is shifting toward the GOP is, of course, nothing new. Southerners have been voting for Republican presidents, senators and governors for decades.
But what this years elections, and the subsequent party switching, have made unambiguously clear is that the last ramparts have fallen and political realignment has finally taken hold in one of the Souths last citadels of Democratic strength: the statehouses.

I think they finally realized that.
Unfortunately, some die-hard “yellow dog Democrats” will probably go to their graves voting against Lincoln and Hoover.
Yes they will but most people who remember Hoover and that FDR “put people back to work” are well into their late 80’s and early 90’s.
Yup, Now it is just the North and West.
Ah, but this New Yorker has values like My Brothers and Sister in Christ down South. I am not the Yankee Elite and never will be. Please do not lump all of us Yankees in that boat.
Bingo. Ben Nelson is history in Nebraska and I think he might have sunk a lot of so-called “Blue Dog Dems’” reelection hopes as well, with his “Cornhusker Kickback” as an excuse to vote for abortion-on-demand and government intrusion into every area of our lives.
It showed us all that there’s no such thing as a pro-life democrat in Congress. When push comes to shove they will all kiss Nancy Pelosi’s rear while flipping off everything and everyone else they claimed to believe in and work for.
The New Party was the communists’ attempt to take over the Democratic Party. The media wouldn’t take up the story before the election when buried internet documents were dug up showing that Obama was a signed member of The New Party, but now it is so obvious that the dems have become communist that we don’t even need the documents proving it; we can figure it out just by looking around us.
I have friends who are democrats and before this election they had no clue what their party was up to. They were stunned to find that their party, for instance, defends Partial-Birth Abortion. They honestly thought the party stood for the little guy and for good Christian charity. These are nice people, and I’ve noticed that the twinkle has gone out of their eyes. It took a blatantly communist alleged POTUS to do it, but they have finally seen what the party has become.
There’s one graph I’d still like them to see: the one showing McCain and Obama neck and neck after both conventions were done - until the electronic run on the bank. On that graph you can pinpoint the exact day that Soros and his minions made the run on the bank, and the graph makes it painfully obvious why it was done. It tells the whole story.
The other graph they should see is the one showing what the projected unemployment rate would be if the “stimulus” was passed, versus what it was supposed to be if the stimulus WASN’T passed - versus what actually happened. Obama was elected because of the run on the bank, but we would have been better off doing absolutely nothing than electing the communists. They were elected because the “little guy” trusted them to help the economy but in reality they hurt the economy. If the prediction models were accurate, this economy would be healed by now if we had only let the economy self-correct rather than handing it over to the same people who have sworn to destabilize and bring our economy to crisis in order to “fundamentally change” this free-market Constitutional republic.
Those 2 graphs together should give everybody a very clear picture of where we’re at and how we got here - and it should forever retire the myth that the democrat party is anything but communist.
We've had a Republican majority in the TX House since the 2002 elections. We barely had a majority last session (76-74) with a speaker with more Democrat than Republican support, but now it's an overwhelming majority (99-51). We can achieve a quorum with just 1 Democrat showing up. They can forget about road trips to Oklahoma or New Mexico to shut down the legislature. It should be much easier to pass the voter ID bill this session!
Well after the results in Maine and New Hampshire, we have a good start on the Northeast. However, we have a very long way to go.
I met the Vermont mentality moons ago in basic training, talk about a pantywaist, sheesh. That guy was all pissed that I had found a way to get sodas and candy undetected. He was all afraid I would keep the squadron from graduating. Good Grief.
We put down the blue dogs this cycle...next cycle we need a massively successful RINO hunt.
I didn’t. That’s why I said “yankee elite”. Regular yankees vote with us more than they vote with their elite! Y’all (or Youse guys) are always welcome down here! :-)
BTW, we have “yankee elite” in places like Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, and Miami so it isn’t a north/south thing anymore.
Not most. Most are dead already and have been for at least 15 years. The ones left are probably too senile to even remember what voting is.
too many liberal Yankees have moved into the South pushing their brand of garbage.
And for a while,John Spratt was a heck of a lot better than some of the RINOs the RNC put against him.
Do you vote for the party or for the man?
Southern Liberal Democrats have only existed in regions where they defeated a Liberal Republican or the district has been gerrymandered to comply with the racist anachronistic federal “voting rights act.”
Not to mention when the Leftists started taking over the Dem Party we became as solid GOP as we were once solid Dem.
Now NO Republican can win a national race WITHOUT the South.
No more excuses, right?
The fact is that people vote for Representatives that Represent them.
When those people sell out their constituency and suck up to a witch who thinks she is the know all ,see all, be all of the House, When they listen to a harridan who could care less about America and seeks power for herself ,they lose that constituency.
Certainly a Speaker of the House can be wrong, but it doesn’t mean that everyone in the House has to follow her over the cliff.
Oh, the word: “youse” was never used in my household growing up: My Late Father - Ex-Army/Military Police, would never let us use that language. Everyone had to eat the same time, no talking or kept at the bare minimum and we had to practice excellent table manners. I miss My Father dearly.
The Midwest made great strides, with legislatures in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota, Senators in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and dozens of congressmen in New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. I think there are only a few RINOs, notably Senator Kirk
“Many of us switched in 1980.”
It should have come clear soon after WWII ended.
The conservative mvement of the 50s/60s had national security at its core.
Many wondered how the events of the 50s, 60s and 70s by the political left/democrat socialist party could have been misread by ANY intelligent Americans?
Nixon and McCarthy had the goods on the communists inside America by the early 50s, who were protected by the media, intelligencia and Democrat party for years and years.
ADM and Monsanto didn't get where they are through honest business, but through bribes and crony legislation.
There is a reason many of the staunchest conservatives here are not members of the republican party. Unrestrained graft anywhere hurts real people. It isn't just something to joke about when piles of money appear in a congressman's freezer. Somebody made more money than they gave said congressman, and other people lost what they would have had.
