How 250,000 US embassy cables were leaked
UK Guardian ^ | 11/28/2010 | David Leigh

Posted on 11/28/2010 5:07:33 PM PST by PhilosopherStone1000

An innocuous-looking memory stick, no longer than a couple of fingernails, came into the hands of a Guardian reporter earlier this year. The device is so small it will hang easily on a keyring. But its contents will send shockwaves through the world's chancelleries and deliver what one official described as "an epic blow" to US diplomacy.

...

The US military believes it knows where the leak originated. A soldier, Bradley Manning, 22, has been held in solitary confinement for the last seven months and is facing a court martial in the new year. The former intelligence analyst is charged with unauthorised downloads of classified material while serving on an army base outside Baghdad. He is suspected of taking copies not only of the state department archive, but also of video of an Apache helicopter crew gunning down civilians in Baghdad, and hundreds of thousands of daily war logs from military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Read the whole thing and look upon the face of a traitor. I know that the US needs military bodies, but I bet I could have figured out he was a traitorous leftie in five minutes of questioning.

If we had a REAL CIA this would have never happen.

I know that Jane Fonda set the bar very high for prosecution of treason, but if this doesn’t constitute treason… nothing ever will. Sadly, I don’t think anything ever will.

There’s something missing here.

WikiLeaks directs its activity against the United States, almost exclusively.

Not against, for example, the Chinese.

Were I in Chinese intelligence, I would set something like WikiLeaks up and enable damaging information to leak out.

WikiLeaks looks as if it is a convenient cover for something else altogether.

I’m not completely buying the cover story about how all this information got out.

Best,

Chris

WTH? This guy Manning is a PFC. How did he get access to so much secret material? Either no one is minding the store or something else might be going on.

I agree. But our current administration doesn’t have the balls to do it (assuming he is found guilty).

death penalty for treason

This is a crime against people struggling against tyranny, the aiding and abeting of the murder of covert operatives and a therefore a crime against humanity. Foreign nationals who publish it should also be the recipients of the maximum penalty covert operations are capable of administering. Is there such a thing as an American Fatwah?

>> If we had a REAL CIA this would have never happen. <<

However bad and incompetent the CIA may be, this series of leaks doesn't appear to be their fault. Based on all that I've seen, the Agency would seem to be entirely blameless.

Rather, the finger of blame should be pointed at the "genius" (or group of "geniuses") in State and/or DOD who decided that such material should be made available to low-level personnel without regard to the old-fashioned security rule of "need to know."

This is why a series of “accidents” and criminal charges need to happen to associates and perhaps close family members of people suspected to be involved. It may be dirty but if the wikileak people for for just not themselves but those they care and love for then this madness will stop. To some of them it is fun and games but in the end real people will die because of this.
