Thank you for sharing this information.

Unfortunately for those in the US military, this pay freeze is in effect for them as well.

I recently read an article in the AF Times that their pay will be frozen for 3 years.

What say you on this?

I won’t be surprised if this so-called freeze turns out not to be a real freeze. What about annual step increases — frozen? What about annual COLAs — frozen? What about token promotions — frozen? What about hiring — frozen?

Will he get his way and freeze military pay for 3 years as Gates and Mullin are requesting?

this freeze is akin to jacking up prices before Black Friday so everyone thinks the deals are worth waiting in line for.

the real thing killing our republic are their pensions.

The article said CIVILIAN, that wouldn’t include the military, would it? < puzzled >

Haven’t heard about the military freeze for 3 years (OUTRAGEOUS!! THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE PAID SO MUCH MORE FOR THEIR SACRIFICES!!)...I hope that isn’t true! Military families have to struggle so much financially, that’s just crazy...I wonder if the current regime is trying to winnow out the armed forces (people who will resign or not re-up) by doing such a thing???

God, I pray that our country survives TIIC!! >:-(

My employer is seriously thinking about going to a four day work week to save on payroll. We employ six people, all long term.

having some experience in this particular field, let me tell you what it means.....the money for the pay increase was already “assumed” in each agency’s budget request for salaries. This means that without a pay increase this money is freed up. Because you must spend all the money you receive (to avoid lapsing funds), this “extra” money is now available to hire additional employees.

Sorry to report, but that’s exactly what happens.

They can set their staff salaries and give part of their own salaries to charity. In this particular instance, Obama is just getting out in front of the parade. The Reps were going to do this anyway. And no doubt, Obama can tie this to the Deficit Commission report, which is probably recommending the same thing. It will come out shortly.

Ronald Reagan changed the Fed Govt. pension plans. It stopped being an annuity (read taxpayer pays all of it) to one that combined social security with a 401(k)-type program. Just like a big business, the employee pays social security and contributes to financial funds (like Wilshire 500). The Fed Gov matches up to a certain amount.

So to say stop the pensions you are saying stop social security in essence. Is this what you mean? How will that affect you?

I don’t have a link for it. It was over 40 years ago. I just remember it being unconstitutional and much much later was given a check to compensate for it.

Per WaPo: "The freeze applies to all federal employees -- including civilian employees of the Defense Department, but not military personnel."

But it also mentions this gigantic loophole: "The freeze will not impact step increases or bonuses for federal workers, according to the White House."

That’s the way it’s going to work. Look for a lot of GS-step promotions in the next two years. Each step’s pay rate will be frozen, but any promotion deserves a raise. Those at the low end, just by the nature of their jobs, will find it difficult to get promotions.

Congress hasn’t approved the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year. A continuing resolution would freeze spending levels at the current year levels.

“Freeze the pay AFTER BRINGING IT IN LINE TO PRIVATE SECTOR RATES and you’re talking business.”

Now you’re talking! Per the article, federal pay and benefits increased 34% over the past decade, while in that time private sector pay and benefits increased 8%.

Keep this in mind the next time you spend two hours on hold and being shuffled from bureaucrat to bureaucrat when calling a federal agency to ask a simple question. You get to witness first hand how underworked the bureaucrats are, you now know how overpaid they are, and you get to see how your own productivity dives while attempting to gather a tidbit of information.

He will do the same thing as he does to Social Security. The fed workers get their pay frozen but then receive a special $2,500 one time payment hidden in a 10,000 page bill.

actually a pay freeze is OTAY by me- over half of any “pay raise” just goes right back to Uncle in higher taxes.
At the marginal rate, it’s better to just throttle back a bit ... take more vacation time .... ..and CUT BACK ON SPENDING AND DEBT.

Barry, we got yer “economy stimulation” right here!
