Yes, I remember that rescue. Wasn't that in
Uganda whose ruler was the despicable Idi Amin?
The date was 7/4/1976, our bicentennial.

Yep. I didn’t remember the exact date, but I remember it happening then.

There was a halfway decent TV movie made about it. Yaphet Kotto played Amin.

I'm starting to think Wikileaks did the world, and the USA a favor.

China ready to abandon NK. Arab leaders begging for a military solution to Iran.

And a US President, either unwilling or unable to act.

This is the ultimate humiliation for the the bulwark of Western Civilization and the sole stabilizing force in the world.

Only Obama and Carter have been totally inept to such opportunity in our entire history.

Oh get real. Every country, in one way or another, spies on every other; Friend and foe alike.

Given your hatred of Jewish, you really should change your name, given that William Shatner is both a proud Jew and a proud Zionist.

Maybe to Sulu, as you both strike me as a little queer.

That’s an irony from a man who leads a government which has repeatedly committed espionage in the U.S. (its alleged “friend.”)

LOL. In international relations, there is no such thing as a 'friend.' There can be mutual interests and objectives, but friendship has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Agreed. That would mean, of course, that those folks who say that Israel is "our only friend in the Middle East," "our best freind" or "loyal and reliable ally" are either fools or liars. It also means that if you are regular reader of the "pray for Israel" threads on this site you'll have a lot of opportunities to laugh out loud!

Friend is the wrong word and wrong sentiment. Our governmental relationship with Israel, or any other ally nation is not based on friendship, which can only exist between individuals, not nations.

"Ally" is the proper term because our two nations have (or at least had until this current administration) common 'allied' interests and objectives.

No, I would not laugh at people who pray for Israel. I wish them well and respect them for their courage, skill and strength in maintaining a functioning Western democracy and the only truly civilized presence an area of the world dominated by medieval savages. In that sense, I pray for them as well.

Thanks for passing on the movie. As I remember
the leader (Bibi's brother) was shot since he was
the last to board the aircraft taking all the hostages.
Just as a ship Captain would behave.
The story didn't get much coverage here since the 4th
was our great 200th Holiday. As far as I know this
rescue was the only one ever from an enemy country.

As an aside: Do you remember that Kennedy had his
chapaquidick(sp?) episode during a special event
===the Armstrong moon landing.

if that had been on any other day, he would have really
been cooked.

Strange, isn't it that such major "Breaking News" happen
to compete on some other major event?

I was about eight when I watched the Moon landing. TV was strongly discouraged in our household at the time, and was generally reserved for special occasions like this and Creature Features with Bob Wilkins on Saturday nights. :-)

I remember standing in my Dad’s and Stepmother’s room in San Anselmo, CA on that day, watching Neil Armstrong on a grainy little tiny back and white TV with rabbit ears.

Needless to say, I had no idea who Ted Kennedy was at the time. Some irrelevant far-away bigshot who got in an auto accident to me at the time.

Love that coincidence. One man makes a giant step for all mankind. One man makes a step for himself, and takes all mankind one step closer into hell.
