Narcissism No Longer a Psychiatric Disorder (President no longer clinically insane!)
NYT ^ | 11/29/2010 | Tara Parker-Pope

Narcissistic personality disorder, characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance and the need for constant attention, has been eliminated from the upcoming manual of mental disorders, which psychiatrists use to diagnose mental illness.

As Charles Zanor reports in today’s Science Times, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders — due out in 2013 and known as D.S.M.-5 — has eliminated five of the 10 personality disorders that are listed in the current edition. The best known of these is narcissistic personality disorder.

It is a puzzle why the manual’s committee on personality disorders has decided to throw N.P.D. off the bus.

Same committee who decided homosexuality was A-OK because ,,,well, because queers didn’t mind it.

Narcissists think they are A-OK too....maybe even way cool.

Maybe some leftists have actually decided that narcissists aren’t crazy, they’re just evil.

Next up, conduct disorder? Maybe there really is such a thing as a bad kid.

Any thoughts on the emphasis placed on building “self-esteem” in the last 20-30 years?

Guaranteed you couldn't find a committee of psychiatrists who believe in the existence of evil.

If depression were no longer a mental illness, they couldn’t get insurance/government to pick up the tabs on their meds anymore.

The insurance companies typically do not pay for some personality disorders already because there is no treatment that works. There is no treatment or cure for narcissistic personality disorder or sociopathic personality disorder. They used to say the same for Borderline Personality Disorder but now there is, not a cure, but a mitigating treatment that helps them get along in our society without actually removing or curing their illness.

So there are (IMHO) diagnosable illness and no treatment or cure for them. I suspect it is getting ‘ready’ for Obamacare that ‘untreatable’ illnesses will not ‘even have a code’ so that the public won’t add them to the list of other treatable illness that Obamacare will refuse to treat.

I think it is terrible - these are recognizable, damaging (to society) illnesses and refusing to name them won’t help. I do wonder if this is the ‘change’ I read about where there will be fewer names for personality disorders but a different way of indicating quality and severity (it’s said to be a continuum with sociopathy at the far end).

No, but Queen Victoria wished it was so. There was actually work on television projects in the 1800s in part because she wanted such a contraption so her public could see her.

I learned this in Charles Francis Jenkins' 1920s book on television (he himself had been working on such devices since the 1890s, and what he called "television", we know as cable-tv, and what he called "radiovision" we know as broadcast television).

“What about hoarders (a year’s fuel/food/entertainment/ammo(well 10 yr)/etc. supply)?”

I’m guessing they’re grouped under obsessive-compulsive disorder.

And the Nazis had television throughout WWII (even broadcasting the 1936 Olympics on tv). As the war dragged on, only Nazi officials and military hospitals and maybe "USO"-type theaters had viewing systems.

The Nazi Party knew a thing about how to use television for propaganda purposes.

IMO your comment is correct.

In my perspective of things I see Narcissism as the basis of Liberalism. Libs are of the opinion there is no other opinion. The World is wrong, and must be corrected, organized, everything must be neat and orderly, Humanity must be all lined up in straight rows by order of their necessity, their priority.

Their unification with others of their ilk, Collectivism if you will is about the rest of the Narcissistic collective agreeing with them, and vice versa.

I also believe these very lost souls as highly aggressive due their inability to see beyond their relationship with their personal existance, thus their uncompromising defense of their perspectives, and therefore their actions.

I believe as well the Liberal sorts are like magnets to criminal elements who see great opportunity promoting such handicaps.

The following manias have now been eliminated from the big book of illnesses:

Egomania (Al Gore is an alphamale, repeat after me...)
Nymphomania (take two asprin and call me later tonight.)
Beatlemania (She don’t love you no more, no, no, no...)
