Finger length predicts prostate cancer risk: study (a digit for your thoughts)

PARIS (AFP) – Men whose index fingers are longer than their ring, or fourth, fingers run a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer, according to a study published Wednesday in the British Journal of Cancer.

The chances of developing the disease drop by a third, and even more in younger men, the study found.

"Our results show that relative finger length could be used as a simple test for prostate cancer risk, particularly in men aged under 60," said Ros Eeles, a professor at the Institute of Cancer Research in Britain and co-author of the study.

Finger pattern could help identify which men should undergo regular screening, especially in combination with genetic testing or other risk factors such as a family history of the disease, she said.

I think this study is talking about the length of the DOCTOR’s finger.

If his finger is too short, he can’t detect cancerous lumps.

The relative length of the two fingers in question...appears to be a marker of different levels of sex hormones to which a baby is exposed in the womb, with less testosterone correlating with a longer index finger.

Earlier research has shown that testosterone promotes the growth of prostate cancer.

So, if you have a long index finger, you have a lower cancer risk, but a higher fondness for show tunes.

It's not testosterone as much as it is its conversion to DHT. 5-Alpha reductase is the problem, even worse when it comes to enlarged prostate.

Men whose index fingers are longer than their ring, or fourth, fingers run a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They’re also likely homosexual or effeminate or no sex drive. or they are just very young. A short index finger and a long ring finger are secondary characteristics resulting from testosterone. In extreme cases, even the pinky finger is enlarged and as long as the index finger.
The thumb is the first finger to grow and to stop growing, followed by the index finger, and so on down the line until the pinky is the last to stop growing. As a small child, the strongest finger on your hand is your thumb. Then a little older, your index finger becomes the strongest. By adulthood, males have the middle finger the strongest on their hand and usually by middle age the ring finger becomes tied with the middle in terms of strength. Often older men will have the ring finger the strongest on their hand.
If we could live long enough, Womens’ hands would get there eventually but it would take twice as long or longer.
I would say my ring finger is slightly stronger than my middle finger and I’m only middle aged. They are so much stronger than my thumb and index finger nowdays I don’t even use thumbs and index fingers when I need to grip something tight.
If you wanna see what our hands would look like(proportionwise) if we lived to be 500years, take a look at the toes of a frog. It wouldn’t surprise me if a frog’s toes grow in the same sequence as human fingers do.
Now we are getting a preview of the guidelines ObamaCare will use to decide if you can get medical care.
Obviously, if your index finger is the correct length there will be no need for you to get PSAs anymore, thus saving the government money.
Look for more studies like this to help the government eliminate expensive and wasteful tests from our medical system. Next up, crystals hanging from strings to replace MRIs as diagnostic tools.
Seriously, your post is absolutely fascinating. I’m a drum student (new to it at middle age) and finger and hand strength is critical. Where did you learn all this, and where can I learn more?
It makes me want to experiment withe different ways to hold the drumsticks.
I can’t picture the strange hand that actually would have a longer index finger than ring finger. Even with women, they’re more likely equal in length.
Who has hands like that? Is this one of those gay things?
No idea. My brain is a magnet for odd trivia. Also I have a knack for spotting patterns and from a very young age have been fascinated by biology, especially mammals...bones and muscle structures etc. Machines too, but I see bone and muscles as a machine.
Here’s another bit of trivia for ya
If there was to be a land race between a perfect specimen of every species, and the race was to have only one rule...no stopping...and the winner was whoever traversed the greatest distance before death, what species would win?(no flying or swimming allowed, and speed not a consideration)
answer: a human.
Several reasons why. The first is fat stores. Not too many animals store fat like a human. Sea creatures do, but not land animals. Pigs, horses, camels, and that’s about it, and they don’t do it quite as much as humans.
another is leg type.
bent legs are less efficient than straight legs. The only animals I can think of off the top of my head that stand/walk with straight legs are camels and elephants...and those I don’t think are perfectly straight. A human stands with perfectly straight legs...almost no muscle exertion required to keep the leg from collapsing under body weight.
another is bipedalism
Two legs are far more efficient than 4 legs. Kangaroos are very efficient but because they don’t stand up straight they aren’t as efficient as humans.(one reason that is)
The biggest reason is the human foot. Our feet are designed to have two arches...one arch from heel to toes, and the other arch from big toe to little toe. These arches provide the most efficient “springs” of any foot in the animal kingdom.
There are other minor reasons. Hair placement. Hair only on the top for sun block, and the rest naked for better heat dissipation. Breathing muscles operate independently from locomotion. 4 legged critters must tighten up their torso when their legs are in “thrust” mode and this means their breathing works best if timed with their stride. human noses are exceptionally efficient at recycling moisture from exhaled air. A long thin piece of flesh sticking out from the head that is cooler than the rest of the body is a phenomenal moisture collector. Humans lose less moisture per unit of air inhaled/exhaled than other creatures.
But back to your question, where to learn more...I would say read up on robot hands. Those guys that are building robot hands know more about human hands than anyone on the planet. They go on and on about how perfect a machine the human hand is.
How many times is this story about finger length going to get press attention? Are journalists obsessed with this issue? It keeps appearing every few months for one reason or another.
Once again, good thing I’m not a man because my index finger is longer on one hand and shorter on the other. I’m confused enough already without having to worry about that too.
There is also a meme that finger length indicates homosexuality.
The researchers claiming this balderdash need to stick their fingers where the sun don’t shine and stop seeking grant money for dumb projects.
Body composition (along with BMI “standards”) all trace back to eugenic theory (that falsely called “caucasian” a race) and pushed somatotyping of body composition as an idicator of constitutional psychology.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatotype_and_constitutional_psychology
and for those who think that the body scanners at the airports are intrusive, incoming students at Yale had to get naked to get their somatotype pictures taken up into the 1960s. Reportedly there are nude photos of Hillary Clinton, George Bush, and others although the school has claimed that they were destroyed long ago.
