190 Proof Liquor Removed From ABC Store Shelves (NC)
nbc17.com/news ^ | 11/30/10 | Staff

Posted on 11/30/2010 6:26:46 PM PST by Rebelbase

The North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission will no longer be selling liquor products with an alcohol content of 190 proof beginning December 1.

The move comes after the Mecklenburg County ABC noticed these liquors were being purchased almost entirely at stores located near college campuses.

"The ABC Commission has long been concerned that young adults drinking nearly pure alcohol are especially vulnerable to alcohol poisoning," said Jon Williams in a press release.

With the delisting, the highest proof liquor sold in ABC stores will now be 151 proof. A 190 proof Everclear item will be replaced by a 151 proof Everclear item and a Diesel 190 proof product will not be replace.

We use Everclear 190 proof as part of a mixture to clean oil paintings. Would never drink it after seeing what it can do to varnish and paint.

"Proof" is twice the alcohol content. 190 proof is 95% alcohol.

Its like watching the anti smokers all over again.. seriously.

Little by little they are going after booze, tiny little increments, and then in a few years they will ban something else.

Trust me, the war on booze is going to make the war on tobacco look like a walk in the park, Thankfully while I do enjoy a occasional smoke, I do not drink.. lol

As a semi-professional imbiber, please allow me to explain.

100 Proof = 50% Alcohol
190 Proof = 95% Alcohol

Beer and wine are measured in %ABV.
Spirits are measured in proof.

That is 95 percent alcohol by volume. Standard drinking alcohol is about 40 percent by volume.

If Spinal Tap can go past 10 - you can go past 100% alcohol.

“Proof” refers to the method once used to test alcohol content, 190 proof is 95% alcohol. It’s meant to be diluted and flavored to produce homemade cordials, drinking it straight is an act of madness.

I always thought it would be a great marketing tool for guitar amps to be sold with “11” volume knobs.

Everclear is a great solvent, fuel, antiseptic, and anesthetic (topical and internal?) Stock up for the apocalypse!

We use it as the solvent of second choice (after water) for things like removing stickers from food serving items, and for anywhere you have stubborn cleaning jobs needing a solvent without petrochemical smell.
