Senate GOP letter calls for blocking most bills

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Republicans intend to block action on virtually all Democratic-backed legislation unrelated to tax cuts and government spending in the current postelection session of Congress, officials said Tuesday, adding that the leadership has quietly collected signatures on a letter pledging to carry out the strategy.

If carried out, it would doom Democratic-backed attempts to end the Pentagon's practice of discharging openly gay members of the military service and give legal status to young illegal immigrants who join the military or attend college.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has made both measures a priority as Democrats attempt to enact legislation long sought by groups that supported them in the recent midterm elections.

A nuclear arms treaty with Russia that President Barack Obama wants ratified would not be affected, since any debate would take place under different rules than those that apply to legislation. Even so, its passage is not assured as Republicans are seeking concessions from the White House.

Officials who disclosed the new Republican maneuver did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss it.

"Despite what some Democrats in Congress have suggested, voters did not signal they wanted more cooperation on the Democrats' big-government policies that most Americans oppose," McConnell and incoming House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, wrote in an op-ed article published in the Washington Post.

Congress has apparently gotten out of the practice of conducting hearings on these acts ~ particularly if it involves food.

The target is supposed to be an e-coli event or two, so the law proposes increasing inspections and providing for proactive responses.

Sounds good I guess.

Fact is the e-coli came from wild hogs who are still out there roaming around passing it on to all and sundry and mostly because Californians no longer hunt like normal people.

Unless there's some secret provision in the bill that gives everybody a rifle, or otherwise arranges for the disposal of the wild hogs this bill doesn't do anything.

Looking at how the voting on the food bill went, I’d say this letter is 100% BS. Fodder for us Tea Party types. I’m not buying it.

Unfortunately, I think the same thing will happen on the DEAM vote. Buncha frigging RINOS.

The RATS are running as hard as they can, trying to inflict as much damage on our country as possible by the end of the year.

I sincerely hope the Repubs are already working on bills for early January seeking to defund as much of this as possible.

Damn glad I’m old. Feel really sorry for the rest of y’all.

The food nationalization, and the $1-billion-plus slavery reparations act.

It's just been stopped in the House, due to the fact that it has aspects that affect the raising of revenue, which of course, can only originate in the House.

Close call, though.

Total BS. Mookowski and the Maine Twins have Aunt Esther disease. The Pubs have hung out the US taxpayes out to dry since Reagan.

The Dems are going suicidal. They don't care that what they're doing will ensure Obama's defeat in 2012.

In fact, they're willing to destroy the career of every sitting Democrat, if that's what it takes to legislate their Glorious Utopia into being.

The 112th Congress and President Palin are going to have their hands full repealing all this junk and shutting down federal agencies.

Blocking you say?

When at least 8 of them voting against:

EARMARKS BAN BILL

and when at least 10+ of them voting for:

FOOD POLICE BILL

Yeah! We need to clean up the Senate Republicans. Remove the OLD TIMERS!

If the GOP’s tie statement meant anything, Mitch Oconnell just about folded before the talks began (hope he didn’t buy the hype that he was going to see a king or something). Showing up in a royal blue tie and the GOP House reps both had on red ties. It’s on in the House.

That’s great that they intend to block things. When are they going to start rolling back government?
