Gibbs: START will be done by Christmas

A long-stalled nuclear arms treaty with Russia will be ratified before Christmas, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday.

Gibbs expressed confidence that optimistic statements from two Republican senators Tuesday indicate the GOP is ready to cooperate with Democrats and authorize the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START).

"Harry, the START Treaty will be done by Christmas," Gibbs said on CBS's "Early Show."

The chances of passage for START during the lame-duck session seemed grim just days ago in the face of near-uniform Republican objections to the pact, but Gibbs's comments show the tide could be turning.

The votes of 67 senators are needed to ratify the treaty.

Led by chief negotiator Sen. Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Republicans have voiced concern that the new treaty, which replaces one that expired last December, would not allow the U.S. to modernize its nuclear arsenal and maintain a strong enough missile defense system.

But Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, and George Voinovich (R-Ohio) said Tuesday that they hope the Senate can ratify the treaty this year.

McCain and Voinovoich would rather make Obama look good than make sure America’s national security comes first!

That says it all!

Obama will give up everything to prove the “reset button” was right.

He and Hillary must be pushing the “reset button” garbage because Republicans are using the term like its relevant.

But the “reset button” was only partly about Russia. Mostly it was about showing how white liberal arrogance “knows better” about foreign policy than George Bush did. Petty cultural politics about moral and intellectual egotism.

Worse, I thought the “reset button” would die after it was laughed at 2 years ago. No, the establishment liberals are hanging on to it and will betray the country, or bargain poorly, for any chance to salvage the “reset button,” the button for their own arrogance.

Its about killing Reagan’s Star Wars dream. McCain and Voinovich could care less about Reagan’s insistence we have the best technology to protect America from a future nuclear attack from ANY adversary. You RINO Dumbasses: in case you haven’t checked lately, its still a dangerous world out there.
