Two of the deep puzzles in human evolution are religion and cooperation between genetically unrelated strangers. In recent years, many researchers have come to believe the two phenomena are intimately linked. If people believe they are being watched and judged by an omnipresent supernatural entity, they may be more willing to perform emotionally binding and costly rituals to signal commitment to a group. The same sense of being watched may also encourage people to be helpful to otherseven when there is no obvious reproductive payoff. In other words: Science suggests that Godand His followershate free riders.

This seems painfully obvious to me. Why would an Athiestic society reward parasites? If someone seeks to benefit from a group; yet contributes absolutely nothing to the group .... what group would want them? Without regard to Christian, Hindu, Wiccan, Islamic or any host of other diety worship; why would any group want a member of their society who neither particated or contributed to the society - yet demanded to share in the benefits of that society?
Science, huh?
I once knew a Cletus Science.
Was he the author of this absurd piece?
Wouldn’t this just be natural law?
As far as the nasty comments at Reason..

They become useful idiots that vote for liberals. In a a NORMAL society, people let lazy deadbeats starve.
My thoughts exactly.
Because every single member of that society hopes to get out far more than they contributed. It's the liberal/progressive way. That's why Godless societies always collapse.
Well Duh....just look at the posts on threads here. We FREERIDERS see it.
Hey wait...they are misusing the term FREERIDER....NOT COOL!!
You must be kidding. Religion and religious "leaders" have been parasites on their victim societies since people started living in caves.
The first fat, lazy, parasitic, cowardly, religious leader was the guy who didn't want to risk getting stomped by the mammoth, so he created some fairy tale to convince the other men that he should remain behind with the women and children, yet because of this fairy tale, he should generously share in the rewards of the hunt (in addition to having the women and children for prey in the absence of the real men).
Thus has it always been. God certainly does not favor such deceitful, evil behavior.
