NewsletterShare Close this Share Box154 Comments | Post Comment.Wed Dec. 1, 2010 2:47 PM PST In its first months in office, the Obama administration sought to protect Bush administration officials facing criminal investigation overseas for their involvement in establishing policies the that governed interrogations of detained terrorist suspects. A "confidential" April 17, 2009, cable sent from the US embassy in Madrid to the State Department—one of the 251,287 cables obtained by WikiLeaks—details how the Obama administration, working with Republicans, leaned on Spain to derail this potential prosecution.

neither of the Bushes blasted current presidents... it doesn’t pay nor does it show any kind of class..... and they are smart enough to know that. Clinton is also careful about what he says.... obamanation has continually been a shift the blame person his entire life.

I don’t trust Mother Jones. Actually, I am to the point of not trusting anyone I do not know personally without research. It’s just part of trying to get to the Truth and live a truth-filled life (for me).

If President Bush could be tried “by other countries” for war crimes, I think Obama knows anything he does wrong, opens the door for them to come after him. Obama realizes these other countries don't just hate Bush, they hate America and allowing Bush to be tried will put him in peril as well as future presidents. (Conservatives have been saying this all along)

Because this is Mother Jones, that’s why.

The thing is, the timing and nature of this piece of work is far less about Obama protecting Bush from prosecution than it is about trying to set up a perception that Obama is a middle-of-the-road guy who actually cares about America.

Obama doesn’t give a rat’s ass about America, and he certainly doesn’t give a hoot about George W. Bush.

We see crap like this because the leftists are trying to paint a picture of possible bipartisan cooperation on just about anything so they can try and advance their agenda (or what’s left of it) before Obama is unceremoniously booted out of office.

And Mother Jones is a fever swamp of moonbattery.

On this, there shouldn’t even be any kind of issue about this at all. Personally, I think that, if this is true, this would say volumes about Obama and his ilk that they actually had to lift a finger to stand up for the best interests of this country. It doesn’t make a statement about their actions being good for the country, it makes a statement about their normal state of affairs which is strongly against the interests of America.

Obama had no choice but to toe the line. Had he not protected Americans from that freak show it would have ignited a world of kangaroo courts. Leftist judges of different nations indicting heads of states because they don’t like their politics. Then somewhere Cheney gets snatched and is put in a Spanish prison, only to make a cannon out of a stove pipe and blast his way out of there. (See: The Ten Ways Dick Cheney Can Kill You)

Obama would have been greatly diminished as a President if he let that freak show play out...and he’s smarter than the teleprompter lets on.

Obama only did ths because his butt is on the line now with all the drone attacks in the Af-Pak theatre that he has ordered, resulting in a number of civilian deaths. Therefore, Obama could also be charged as being a war criminal.

I have to disagree about why Bush didn’t make a lot of noise about Obama. What Republican president has ever criticized his successor and why would Bush be any different? He didn’t defend himself enough while he was in office!

Obama surely must realize that if Bush could be prosecuted by an international entity, he would also be subject to the same possibility. Obama has also seen the polls that are trending upwards about Bush and does not want to face what will happen to his own numbers were he to turn a two-term president over to foreigners. The I-can-pummel-my-sibling-but-don’t-you-dare factor.

Those efforts apparently paid off, and, as this WikiLeaks-released cable shows, Gonzales, Haynes, Feith, Bybee, Addington, and Yoo owed Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton thank-you notes.

Only an asylum inmate would say something so insane. If the Obama administration had cooperated with and otherwise egged on the Spanish, the 2010 elections would have been a bigger tsunami. And the Obama administration was speaking the truth - the public reaction would have been intense and vitriolic, against both Obama and all Spanish-speaking nations - not the kind of thing Obama wanted to bring up amidst his amnesty efforts.

“I don’t trust Mother Jones.”

I don't either. A liberal acquaintance once gave me a gift subscription to the magazine. I read a few issues, but soon just put them directly in the trash. Really stupid articles written by nontechnical people trying to pretend they were experts in various fields. And always validating the socialist/liberal mind set.

For the first year and a half or so in office, Obama trashed Bush every time he opened his mouth, but even he realized letting a foreign government try a former President for “war crimes” wouldn’t go over with the public (apart from the mainstream media and academic circles). Even a lot of Democrats would have been outraged by that spectacle.

LOL...me too. My brother in law used to give me copies, and I read a few. A few was enough.

Reminds me of the time my mother-in-law (a REAL liberal) gave me a copy of “The People’s History of The United States” as a Christmas present. She knew I loved to read, and was a history buff.

I was kind of excited when I got it, too. So when I sat down and began reading, just a paragraph in I said to myself “WTF?”

I skipped a few pages and read a few more passages. Then skipped a few chapters to some key historical events, and read those. After ten minutes, I got up, went out to my garage and threw the book in the trash.

Funny thing was, my mother-in-law really was trying to get me a book she thought I would like. She had no idea, she just saw it on the bargain book rack at Borders, and grabbed it...:)

You're an idiot. Seriously. Bush hasn't bashed 0bama because to do so is unPresidential...

...not because, as you imply above, that the "Bush 6" were actually under legitimate suspicion.

That Spanish case was *entirely* political.

If this is true, it is just a very rare example of this administration doing what is should be expected to do.

The precedent of a US President or his representatives being threatened from abroad could hurt Obama in the future. He was probably just looking out for himself.
