Scottish soldiers serving in Afghanistan have discovered a surprising taste among local people - a love of the bagpipes. Troops from the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, received "enthusiastic acclaim" from Afghans when they played the pipes at a meeting to discuss security along a key road in Helmand Province

Perhaps because it sounds quite a bit like the snake-charmers flute.

Its in their legends. They've heard the 'pipes before.
Her Majesty's Troops, as well as Soldiers from Johns Company (The East India Company), were in the Afghan about 180 or so years ago.

With quite terrible results.

There once was a young Scotsman who moved off to Australia. His mother worrierd about him, so he wrote her every day to reassure her that he was doing well in his new apartment in Sydney.

But, after four weeks, he could take it no more, and he wrote her with the truth:

"Oh Mama! Sydney is a terrible place! My apartment building is horrible. The woman across the hall yells at me every day, the couple on the left fights all the time, and the man upstairs just threw himself out the window... But I am doing like you said and working hard, staying out of the bars, and practicing my pipes three hours each day..."

I'd like to see this played more often for the Taliban.

I personally love the sound of bagpipes (maybe it’s in my Celtic blood or something). They have a haunting sound to me if played outside.

They’d be changing their tune if they’d ever heard Mexican bagpipes.

Maybe it’s not bagpipes. Maybe it’s Fran Drescher.

Yep, me too but it wouldn't sadden me a bit if every accordion in the world suddenly came up missing.
