Q. Why do bagppipers walk around when they are playing bagpipes?

A. They’re trying to get away from the noise.

Yep, me too but it wouldn't sadden me a bit if every accordion in the world suddenly came up missing.

But, but, we'd never hear, "Lady of Spain" again!!

There’s only one cool song with bagpipes and that’s AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)”

When I started on the pipes I was told there are more Highland pipers in Pakistan than in Scotland, and that when the Pakistani National Anthem was commissioned, one requirement was that it be playable on the Highland pipes. So this is no surprise.

Is that cool or what? Tyanks!

Not sure the fellow on the right (in photo) is fingering in the proper fashion, but the fellow on the left seems to be.

They’d be changing their tune if they’d ever heard Mexican bagpipes.

LOL - the Spanish word for piper is "gaitiero" (plays the "gaita"), and connotes "a wild and crazy person."

Not sure how this is any different from "piper."

BTW, it's a gaitiero who's the reason I took up Highland pipers.

Somewhere in Unix systems is the quote of the day: "Accordion: a bagpipe with pleats."

I love the sound of bagpipes. I also love the french accordion

The French have some great bagpipes too; five different types as I recall (perhaps if you include adopted celtic pipes).

The petit biniou is the highest pitched and played alone sounds like a mosquito you really, really want to swat. Now! But balance it with the deeper-voiced bombarde and you have a suite duo. Very enjoyable music.

Scottish soldiers serving in Afghanistan have discovered a surprising taste among local people - a love of the bagpipes.

Me too. Brings tears to my eyes it does.

No so surprising. I remember someone from Laos hearing music from the CD Flight of the Green Linnet and saying, "They're playing my country's music!" Similar scales. But I've also seen refugees from Liberia love this same music. Some of their favorites were: The Parish of Dunkeld, Lucy Cassidy/The Bletherskate/The Smith of Chilliechassie, and Jack Haggerty.
