Conn. man sentenced to death in home invasion

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Connecticut man has been sentenced to death for the killings of a woman and her two daughters in a gruesome home invasion.

Steven Hayes apologized for the crimes just before New Haven Superior Court Judge Jon Blue pronounced the sentence Thursday morning.

A jury that convicted Hayes in the killings condemned him to death last month.

Hayes sexually assaulted and strangled Hawke-Petit. Authorities say he and Joshua Komisarjevsky tied the girls to their beds, poured gasoline on or around them and set fire to their home in Cheshire.

Komisarjevsky goes on trial next year.

Isn’t that cruel and unusual? Death in home invasion is an odd way to go.

Also, good.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_Connecticut

>>Connecticut, along with New Hampshire, are the only two New England states that maintain a death penalty. Since the 1976 United States Supreme Court decision in Gregg v. Georgia, Connecticut has executed one individual. Death row inmates are placed in the Connecticut Department of Correction system. The state’s death row for men currently houses ten male inmates, who are incarcerated at Northern Correctional Institution in the town of Somers. Women who receive the death penalty would go to the York Correctional Institution, the only state prison for women in Connecticut.

>>The method of execution currently utilized for capital punishment in Connecticut is lethal injection.

This is the case of the 2 men who got the mother to go to the bank to withdraw the ransom money; then later she and her daughters were killed and house set on fire (husband escaped). The two killers were caught when they fled...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1314418/Steven-Hayes-Chilling-confession-Connecticut-massacre-killer.html

>>After holding the family captive for hours, the intruders forced Mrs Hawke-Petit to draw $15,000 from her bank account and then strangled her to death before leaving her children tied to their beds to die in their burning house.

Dr William Petit, the sole survivor, hung his head as Detective Anthony Buglione told a jury in New Haven, Connecticut, that Hayes claimed his plan was to break into a home, tie up the residents, steal their money and flee.

But then Hayes, 47, told him: ‘Things got out of control.’

In the first detailed account of the horrific home invasion, the detective said the emotionless Hayes claimed he carried out the raid because ‘his life sucked – no money, not enough to eat...

‘His mother told him he couldn’t use the car and gave him until the end of the week to move out.

from same article:
>>But he said that when he got back, Komisarjevsky inferred he had sex with the younger girl and told Hayes to have sex with the mother to make them even.

Hayes told police he had sex with Mrs Hawke-Petit before Komisarjevsky came into the room and told him Dr. Petit had escaped and the police were coming.

Hayes said he smelled gasoline and the men grabbed some jewelry and the money and were arrested as they fled.

Detective Buglione said Hayes made no mention that the house had been torched, killing all three female victims.

Sgt. Karen Gabianelli testified earlier that some of the victims’ belongings were found with the suspects.

He tied the girls to their beds, poured gas on them and burned them to death.

And yet they will still swab his arm with alcohol when they gently put the needle in. I say they should rent an industrial tree chipper and put him in feet first for what he did.

NH is the other New Eng state with one though in a couple recent cases it didn’t apply; two Vermont teens killed a couple Dartmouth Coll. professors but I think were too young for DP (one got life, the other 25 years—he will be out when he’s 42 unless there’s some kind of good behavior deal) and in the tiny town of Mont Vernon NH, four teens murdered a mother and disfigured her daughter—who is still a live only because she pretended to be dead.

They will not get DP either, IIRC.

But yes CT and NH (which is turning red again,
thankfully) have DP. (In MA voters passed it but legislature overturned it!)

When a person is served too much alcohol (a legal drug) and gets into a car crash because of their impaired judgement, the bartender/server is prosecuted.

These two men were drug addicts, if I recall. When will we start to prosecute their dealer for his part in this?

And then if he doesn’t have adequate IV access, they’ll postpone the execution - I think that has actually happened. Whereas they should say, “Darn it, dude, we can’t get an IV. In that event, the law reads we have to turn you over to the victims’ family...”

(Or the general prison population would also be fine.)

The disgusting part being that in truth and fact he will die of old age after living off of the taxpayer. The other alternative being early release so that he may run for public office and tour the talk show circuit where he will make millions.

Even with a horrible crime like this, it’s kind of surprising that a Connecticut jury and judge would impose the death penalty.

I agree with the earlier comments that he’s likely to die of old age before he exhausts the appeal process. But at least this is one hopeful indication that the people of that state haven’t lost their minds entirely to the invasion of liberal culture.

Yea and in 30 years and 1500000000000000 appeals he may just die.

1 appeal within the year, then outback with a 22 short pistol, and every joint in his body a receptacle for the aforementioned 22 short, a bucket of gas and a bic lighter. Die slowly SFB.

No argument from me ... I like to think that the dying part will be easy on this vermin compared to what will follow ... like Ted Kennedy (D-HELL) I think he will meet with the proper afterlife. And, most likely, each other.

This a-hole has tried to kill himself a few times in the last few years. he has stated he wants to die. When sentenced to death, he smiled and thanked the jury. He says he wants to forgo the appeals process.

In light of all that, and being not only familiar with the trial but also very close friends with the responding officers, justice would be much better served by letting the ghouls in gen pop loose on him. Oh he’d be raped. And tortured. And ultimately killed.

Trust me.

Surprising a lib state like CT has a death penelty.

CT has executed ONE person since 1976 (and he - serial killer Micheal Ross - WANTED to be executed). It is more likely that Hayes will die of old age than by injection.

Meanwhile, the lawyers make a ton of money off of endless appeals.

Whether you are for or against the death penalty, the Connecticut system of endless appeals is not justice.

Newly elected Commiecrat governor Daniel Malloy is highly likely to commute any and all pending death sentences because of his oh sooooo refined sensibilities as a privileged Fairfield County red. Unless this case's notoriety prevents it, Malloy will sign a repeal of the death penalty as well when what ought to occur is a restoration of Old Sparky as the execution method.

Also, bear in mind that Hayes looks like a Boy Scout by comparison with his partner in rape, arson, murder and terrorism against two young girls and their mom and in beating the dad senseless.

You would have to see and experience what a very nice town Cheshire, Connecticut, truly is to appreciate the effect of such crimes on the sense of personal security of everyone in that entire community.

IIRC, the bank, having figured out what was going on when the mom was taken there by Hayes to clean out the substantial family accounts, immediately called the Cheshire police with all relevant info and the Cheshire PD lollygagged for an extensive time while the arson, one or more rapes and the murders occurred. There was no reasonable excuse for the delay in that verrrrry low crime town. I lived in the town next door to Cheshire before moving to Illinois and I am very familiar with Cheshire.

The defense attorney, Public Defender Tom Ullman, actually argued in the sentencing phase that Hayes did what he did because his parents divorced when he was 10 years old. To which, we may say that with all the divorces going on in America it is a good thing that all 10 year old kids of divorcing parents are not committing crimes of this magnitude 37 years later. Even as a recovering criminal defense attorney, and being acquainted with Ullman, I have a hard time imagining any rational person making such an argument for a client. There is no shame that could compensate for such a defense, none.

At the actual sentencing, the argument was that 47 year-old Hayes was living a life that "sucked" and that his mother (there she goes again!) had given him only a few days to move out of her house (at 47 years old, no less!) which is not likely to be located in Cjeshire. Pooooor babeeee, don't you just feel for him???? I mean, being rudely kicked out of the nest to fend for himself at only 47 years of age! What's a guy to do?

Here's the Malloy-proof solution: Wait until his sidekick is convicted next year. Send both to Somers, the maximum security state prison, distribute photos of the crime scene and the victims in a packet given to each normal criminal at Somers and some or all of them will put an end to the appeals, the perps and give crime a marginally better name. Prisoners at Somers REALLY despise child rapists.

And the court sentenced this CT man to death? So what? He will get 25 years worth of appeals at taxpayer expense or the verdict reversed on a technicality. Justice would have been that once the sentence was pronounced, this “wonderful” human being was escorted outside and treated to a collapsing platform with an attached rope. However, we are much too “civilized” for such barbaric things.
