Sen. John McCain of Arizona led a group of skeptical Republicans questioning a new Pentagon report that supports the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding gays serving in the military.
Lawmakers got their first opportunity Thursday to question top Pentagon officials on Capitol Hill about the findings of a much-anticipated study released Tuesday, focusing largely on the possible timeline for such a change and its potential impact on military operations, especially on front-line combat units.
But Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen defended the recommendation and urged Congress to act and not leave the matter to the courts. Adm. Mullen bristled at one point when it was suggested his opinion was less valuable than that of commanders directly dealing with troops.
"You do not have to agree with me on this issue," Adm. Mullen told Mr. McCain. "But don't think for one moment that I haven't carefully considered the impact of the advice I give on those who will have to live with the decisions that advice informs."
A second day of hearings Friday could produce new drama as the leaders of the four services - the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy - will testify. The most anticipated testimony Friday will likely be from Marine Commandant James F. Amos, who has openly questioned the call for repeal of "don't ask, don't tell."

Also, the goal of the report was to push Barry’s agenda on this issue.
I’ve wondered why they didn’t conduct scientific opinion polls rather than the mass solicitation of responses to a long questionnaire. All sorts of bias and personal interest, or lack of interest could have entered into the decision of whether or not to fill out and return the questionnaire.
Scientific opinion polls would probably have been more accurate and less expensive than this massive effort.
And even with the skewed bent of the questionaire and the obvious likelihood that most of the service men and women who bothered to fill out the questionaire were homos themselves, the report failed miserably to convince anybody that Marines are okay with being ogled in the barracks by activist homos.
The Obama spin masters would not have liked the results of an accurate poll...so no scientific polling.

All general/admiral appointments are essentially Presidential appointments.
You especially don’t get that third or fourth star if you are not mouthing the company line.
Too many of these recent JCS Chairmen have been pure political appointees, not warriors. Peter Pace and Dick Myers were OK. Most of the other ones (Clinton, Carter, Obama appointees) were political maneuverers.
It’s not surprising that they all got rewards for their acquiescence - ambassadorships, Cabinet appointments.
Let’s hope that our military barracks do not become homo versions of Tailhook.
Two of the four Joint Chiefs testify tomorrow (Dec. 3rd) are surely opposed to repealing DADT. The Marine and Army Chiefs.
A lot more than 12% will leave the military if DADT is dropped. The cost of implementation will be enormous.
The military better be ready to triple its lawyer corps, because its going to be up to its eyeballs prosecuting “hate crimes”.
I am thinking the same thing. The legal profession will have a gold mine in the military with all of the litigation coming down the pike.
That’s the point. Now if a straight male gets harassed by a homosexual, he will automatically be sent to reeducation camp to readjust his hateful, rude thinking.
Also the homosexual commanders will have a field day with their new young recruits. It will be no different than having men commanding women and sleeping in the same barracks.
