HARRISBURG - For eight years, Gov. Rendell has lobbied hard in the halls of the Capitol for what he calls "commonsense" handgun laws.
He wanted to limit sales to individuals to one handgun a month. He wanted owners to report lost or stolen weapons. He wanted to close a loophole in state law that he believes lets criminals use gun permits obtained in other states.
At each turn, the legislature - including some of his allies in the Democratic-controlled House - knocked down the proposals like so many slow-moving clay birds on a skeet-shooting range.
On Monday, Rendell defended his weekend veto of a bill expanding gun owners' self-defense rights - but declared his efforts to reduce gun violence through legislation "an abject failure."
"It's a lost cause in Pennsylvania," Rendell said in a conference call with reporters. He accused the General Assembly of kowtowing to the National Rifle Association.
"The legislature proved consistently in my eight years that they are scared to death to buck the NRA," he said. "It's incredibly frustrating, the hold the NRA has over the legislature. It's embarrassing."
The lame-duck governor spoke even as his Republican successor, Tom Corbett, was signaling he would sign the bill Rendell had just vetoed.

Don’t let the door hit ya, Ed!
Fast Eddie coming to a fast conclusion and a light bulb over the head moment!!!
This statement alone shows how stupid Rendell is. I wonder if he has instructed his private security detail to not shoot first...talk to them...reason with them...right. With Rendell's attitude toward guns, I hope he isn't the victim of a home invasion--he would be DOA in a heartbeat.
As a proud member of the NRA and one of their ILA volunteers, I'm happy to hear that gun control as Rendell sees it is a "lost cause". I can't wait to see our Castle Doctrine bill signed into law by Corbett.
Not only that but that quote makes it clear that he thinks that gun owners are trigger-happy. Serious gun owners are probably the least trigger-happy people I know.
The embarassment caused by Rendell is SO voluminous that I think SOME of it crossed the Mason-Dixon line, traveled south through Maryland along Rt 15, and oozed in to the Potomac, heading towartds Loudoun County, Virginia.
My working theory is that this is what caused White’s Ferry to be mired in ‘debris’ in the middle of the river yesterday, ultimately leading to its cable snapping and some passengers and their cars getting a ‘Missouri boat ride’.
;-)
Ed Rendell...internal/eternal enemy.
* you.
Philadelphian “Fast Eddie” Rendell, in all the rest of Pennsylvania, is also a lost cause.
One of Philly’s less attractive exports.
Rendell is thew lost cause and good riddance to bad rubbish.....
Good. I hope that the sanity that prevailed in the Keystone State takes root south of the Mason Dixon line.
Apparently not, as they keep re-electing him.
Little Ray, he’s done and gone. And one re-election against a political novice is not “they keep electing him”.
Do us all a favor and return to Philadelphia, the colon of the Commonwealth, and see if you can get all the Libtards to apply for admission to a Libtard state more compatabile with your warped values.,p>At one time, New Jersey would have taken you. I'm not so sure they will anymore. So try Maryland or Delaware.
Just wait until after the elections of 2012, when the Progressives/Communists in the Democrat Party and their lapdogs in the party-run media realize that a revolution has taken place in America. They will wail like demons as they face the demise for now of their perpetual dream of destroying a free America.
If they were honest, they should thank the patient patriots who will accomplish this with ballots instead of bullets, in the admirable way Pres. Reagan vanquished the USSR.
Not only is this fat crooked bastard out as gov, the demonRATs lost the House and the pubbies kept the senate so we finally have a PA government that says they will listen and had better be responsive to the citizens.
I've written my new pubbie state representative and he says he will introduce some laws and reforms that need passing.
Example are voter ID requirement, change to the distribution of the electoral votes from winner takes all to representative by congresscritter district {this will prevent demonRAT domination via voter fraud in Presidential elections}.
Absolutely wonderful. I am very happy for Pennsylvania. They are fortunate to be rid of this... person.
