Senate Republicans on Saturday voted against extending the Bush tax cuts to only the middle class in a pair of votes Democrats are seizing to paint the GOP as guardians of the rich.
The Senate voted 53-36 to extend all expiring tax cuts on individuals with incomes of less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000 -- seven shy of the required 60 to advance.
The other proposal, which drew opposition from White House officials, would have renewed them for all tax filers with incomes of $1 million or less. That also failed in a 53-36 vote.

Is your point, abolishing the tax cuts is a tax increase?
My point is if last year a tax rate was X% and this year it Y%, and Y>X you have had a tax increase.
okay, got it....This headline is biased though, so our leaders best get on the move.
Who wrote that headline? The Saudi prince?

I hope I didn’t come off as cruel. I think that exchange shows how easy it is, for ALL of us, to be swayed by smooth talking snakes unless we are constantly on guard and skeptical.
Biased headline. Could have easily said “Republicans reject tax increases only for high earners”.
Somehow the democrats discovered that Bush actually cut taxes for the middle class.
I hate lying liberals.
The usual pro-bank bailou,t free traitors are in support of their Repiblican corporate schills.
Sigh...
And to anyone who sees me sliding down the statist path, even slightly, please please correct me. I would consider it a public service. We’re all in this together.
Maybe I misunderstand what the vote was about. I understand it as a vote against raising the highest tax rates. Am I mistaken?
Didn’t vote?
Thanks for nothing.
Don’t complain!
What ever comrade...
I hafta wonder if the Republicans would support entending the tax cuts for the rich only...Seems they've done this in the past...
It is nice to see the Republicans in the Senate showing some backbone for a change.

Sure it’s possible. The democrats passed a retroactive tax increase. Why couldn’t you pass a retroactive tax cut.
The Democrats subscribe, in part, to the P.T. Barnum theory of taxation.
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
Why would you wonder that? Have you heard any republican suggest that?
“The voters” want a BIG government nanny state with lots of free handouts, goodies and freebies. They just want somebody else to pay for it. Alexis de Tocqueville was right. America is in BIG trouble.
Let's tell them! Tell them all!
