"Special operations raids have increased as well -- more than 1,500 night raids in a 90-day period, with daytime raids numbering 17 a day.
But the Taliban is fighting back hard, and the soldiers at Camp Joyce see it every day.
"Lots of ambushes, things along those lines, a lot indirect fire, they stage themselves throughout the mountains here," Sgt. Christian Gatison told us."

My sons Marine Corps unit leaves tomorrow, and I’m terrified for him and them.
Our warriors are AWESOME, just wish they’d drop a few clusters & be done with them.
.
“Indirect fire”.... what does that mean? I know someone who was recently killed in Afganistan by “indirect fire” — seemed pretty direct to me.... Does this protect Hussein’s terrorist buddies so that we’re not allowed to fire back?
What? No, "indirect fire" has always been what they call artillery or mortar fire since the weapon isn't actually directly facing it's target (like a rifle). Sometimes things aren't an Obama conspiracy.
Indirect fire means the shooter cannot directly see the target he is firing at. Artillery, mortars, rockets are all indirect fire weapons. Small arms, tanks, etc. are generally direct fire weapons.
Nope, sorry, that term has only been bandied about “lately” as in the past couple of years.

Direct Fire: high velocity, low trajectory. For example: rifle, machine gun, tank cannon.
Indirect Fire: low velocity, high trajectory. For example: Mortar, artillery cannon,
Rockets and guided missiles can be either direct fire or indirect fire weapons.
Hope this helps.
Let's see. 17 day raids per day, and that makes... um... 17 night raids per day.
Why didn't they just say so?
Thanks.
Nope sorry, unless you served before 1900 you should have heard that term. Here's a MOH citation from the Vietnam era that says indirect fire. http://homeofheroes.com/moh/citations_living/vn_a_herda.html
Specifically, mortars or rockets.
Maybe our prayer warriors can help out there.
