Oprah Winfrey has chosen a pair of Charles Dickens classics, "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Great Expectations," as the latest selections for her popular book club.

Winfrey said on Monday's episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" she has never read Dickens before. She said, "It's the best of times, readers," and called the books timeless classics.

Why not David Copperfield? I was forced to read Great Expectations in high school and it made me hate Dickens for a long time.

Revolting little Pip.

I’ve always loved ATOTC.

In fact some years ago I inherited a complete set of Dickens printed in the 1870s - green and gold - and the first one I picked up was ATOTC.

I don’t have a college education so my opinion is worthless, of course.

I find your opinion very worthy.

I love ATOTC and think the character of Sydney Carton is the best character in literature today.

I’m just repeating what this fellow called Aristotle said.

Pip is not a likeable character. That’s what makes GE so interesting. It’s about how success made him a hollow person because he lacked the moralpsychological grounding for it.

Since I don’t watch her show, I didn’t know she had recommended other classics. Amazing. Maybe there’s hope after all.

I always liked Sydney Carton. It’s very inspiring to read about heroes - his act was one of incredible heroism.

I don’t like reading books wherein the main character is a weakling, traitor or other type of creep.

I’m not much of a fiction reader anyway.

And he’s a mystery, too. Dickens never tells us why he had given up on himself.

For ATOTC fans, the best film version is the 1958 one starring Dirk Bogarde.

Most tragedies are based on a flawed protagonist.
