Before Sept. 11, 2001, became a transitional date in American history, there was the "date which will live in infamy." Today marks Pearl Harbor Day, in remembrance of those who lost their lives in Japan's surprise attack on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

More than 350 Japanese aircraft, launched from several carriers positioned north of Hawaii, sank or damaged 16 ships, destroyed 188 U.S. aircraft, caught on the ground, and killed 2,402 personnel.

Except on Google. Bet they do something for John Lennon tomorrow, though.

This was my Dad’s war. He told the story, when he was still with us, of gathering around the radio on that Sunday Dec 7th 1941 with a solemn group of fellow engineering students at Penn State. He said, We knew we were going to war. The university enrolled them in ROTC and put them on an accelerated schedule so they could join up.

Finally - LATE in the day, we get a post about Pearl Harbor in Breaking News...

Mods - leave it here! 8^)

I was only a bit over 4 months old when Pearl was hit, but it didn't take me more than a couple of years to fully understand that we were in a war for our very survival.

My father, and later my step father, were in the war - as were all of my uncles. And, I saw the many that came home missing limbs. I heard the many conversations about the war - it was almost always what anyone talked about...

We only have one “great generation” left in America, our military. Our President is an American hater, as is his wife, the Democrat Party is composed of America haters and destroyers of this great country and the Republicans are whimps to the maximum. When I think of Pearl Harbor, the Doolittle Rand on Japan, the Battle of Midway.....and on and on in both theaters, Pacific/Atlantic and European I see greatness and sacrifice made wllingly by millions of Americans in and out of the military. America is no longer that nation. And....what is left of it, Obama and his traitor Democrat Party are working their hardest to destroy all of it. Sad for America, and...sad that the American people are such fools. Well, history repeats itself, Rome fell asleep at the wheel and died. America, I fear is on the same path with lots of help from Obama and his disgusting ilk of America haters, calling themselves Democrats!!!

And the fickle finger of fate to FDR for arranging for the attack on Pearl Harbor, so Germany would then declare war on us, and force us to help GB. Other thread on this has voluminous data- FDR knew and so did Marshall (Marshall later volunteered to resign his office in 1944).

A great generation who sacrificed all for the sake of freedom and for people they never met. Honor.

My dad left high school his senior year and could only get into the Merchant Marines due to medical problems. They were also heroes in that war. Here's to you dad!

Earlier thread w/ video of FDR giving his famous “double meaning” speech. The infamy was the japanese, and his duplicity.

This thread covers the facts extensively:
