Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who doubles as President Barack Obama's point man on Gulf Coast oil spill recovery, is pressing America's armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible.
Navy Capt. Beci Brenton said Monday that Mabus has talked with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the secretaries of the Air Force and Army, and his staff has talked to the Defense Commissary Agency, which operates a worldwide chain of stores for military personnel, making the point "that we should be buying Gulf Coast seafood."
In a meeting Monday with Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Mabus reaffirmed his commitment to using the tools at his disposal to help the Gulf seafood industry recover from the damage the BP oil spill has done in reality and perception. The board is gearing up for a large-scale national marketing campaign, with $30 million in BP money and millions more in federal dollars, to reassure restaurants and markets across the country that Gulf seafood is safe.
"He expressed what we wanted to hear: He is in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf," said Smith, who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, "whether it's the military or prison systems or school systems."

Guess what? They are a Chicago based chemical manufacturer who got a phone call from someone unmentioned at 3:00AM which told them to make that oil go away.
They did what they were told to do by the feds. Very profitable I'm sure. There is not much to the dispersant based on the MSDS. It's easy to say something "chemical" is bad.
It's not like he snuck into homes of children with downs syndrome and put radioactive isotopes in their breakfast cereal?
Ordering federal agencies to buy commodoties from a specific source for reasons of support is nothing new.
Didn't we just get a floor vote on a food safety bill? Doesn't it cover this? or is it only for Monsanto?
I don’t know if the gulf seafood is safe, either. I do know, however, that the means by which the government has certified the seafood is safe are suspicious, at best. Theres an article about the testing here:

Apparently, the high-sensitivity testing for dispersants consisted of a chemical test for Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (aka Dulcolax). Great. Dulcolax is (1) not that toxic and (2) likely to not be well absorbed into living organisms (it’s used as a stool softener exactly because it’s not well absorbed).
Did they test for hydrocarbons, i.e. all that stuff that (1) is toxic (2) makes up crude oil (3) is well absorbed into flesh and (4) dissolves into fat? Why, yes they did. They used “sensory testing” i.e. they had people sniff a big bunch of dead fish, smelling for slightly-higher-than-background traces of an oily smell. Not chemical testing, not absorption spectroscopy, not mass spectroscopy, not even dog testing (dogs are generally believed to have 10,000 times more olfactory sensitivity than humans). Seems like they picked a testing method that would specifically NOT detect toxins unless present in giant concentrations.
So, this “testing” program proved that the fish is safe. Great. Based on the story, however, the “testing” program doesn’t seem like it possibly prove any such thing. Just something to consider.
I lived in the Pensacola area twice, and thought that the Gulf had some of the best seafood available.
There are 80 square miles of dead fish on the Gulf floor. The submersible returned covered in oil and disperant.
Help yourself.
Do you have proof? I don’t trust scientists who have political agendas. There are millions of sq miles of healthy fish to eat. I will enjoy your portion.

Living in Oregon you have access to prolific NW Pacific goodies. Why would you eat something from 1/2 the country away when fresh fish is available from your own coast? I'm sticking with NC seafood.
