(Christine) O'Donnell calls extending jobless benefits a 'tragedy' ("like Pearl Harbor")
The Hill ^ | 12/8/10

By Shane D'Aprile - 12/07/10 10:22 PM ET

Christine O'Donnell on Tuesday compared the "tragedy" of extending unemployment benefits to Pearl Harbor and the death of Elizabeth Edwards.

"Today marks a lot of tragedy," O'Donnell, the Tea Party-backed GOP Senate candidate from Delaware, said Tuesday night during an appearance in Virginia.

"Tragedy comes in threes," O'Donnell said. "Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth Edwards's passing and Barack Obama's announcement of extending the tax cuts, which is good, but also extending the unemployment benefits."

O'Donnell continued: "The reason I say this is a tragedy is because his announcement of economic recovery was more of a potpourri of sound bytes. It's like he took a little bit of what each party wanted and put it together. It's not a solid plan constructed on sound economic principles."

The tragedy is that federal unemployment “benefits” are completely unconstitutional, like nearly everything else the federal government does.

Same reason Bill Mahr hired her for HIS show.

Because what she says reflects badly upon christian conservatives.

This will not be the last we have heard of C.O.D. (cash on delivery).

They would love Christine O’Donnell to be the face of the Tea Party and of the Republican Party.

The left will try to hang her around our necks for the next decade (or longer).

No where in the article does Christine say that the extension of unemployment benefits is "like Pearl Harbor", nor is that in the headline of the original article.

You're as bad as the liberal media.

Christine, if you don't go away, how can we miss you?

Is it that you hate all women or just conservative women?

O'Donnell did not equate the new spending bill to Pearl Harbor she simply intimated that it was drafted on December 7th, the same day as Pearl Harbor and the same day that Elizabeth Edwards died.

Frankly extending the unemployment benefits is a tragedy in that it goes against everything the Tea Party stands for. We wanted the Government to start shutting down these welfare programs, not extending and expanding them. Whatever revenue is generated by the economic gains brought about by the extension of the tax cuts will be offset by the costs of extending unemployment benefits.

Another wasteful government program paid for by our children and their children.

If Obama marked 9/11 as a sad day for two reasons, the attack on the World Trade Center and also the day his favorite tax bill failed in Congress, what would you say about that?

For all his faults, I think Obama would be smart enough not to exploit the victims of 9/11 to advance a tax bill.

The problem with the way the media and republicans are reporting on Obama’s cave-in yesterday is that our side keeps buying into the tax cut terminology.

There are no tax cuts. We are simply continuing the SAME tax rates that were in effect last week and today. What has happened is that there is now NO TAX INCREASE.

What this economy NEEDS is a tax cut. It is getting no tax cut at all, but it is getting a cost increase because unemployment benefits have been extended on MORE PEOPLE.

Everything that was in place when this economy died is still in place, but the costs have been increased.

And the “payroll tax” continuation is actually a not a tax reduction, either, since that money goes to prescribed plans like medicare and social security causing them to be further underfunded. It is the continuation of underpaying of benefits plans by the groups that overuse those plans at the same time as more baby boomers are coming of age also to draw from those plans.

The ONLY positive an employer might see from yesterday is that his taxes did not go up for a period of a measley two years. Is that enough to make me hire new people? For a few companies that might be enough, but for many small businesses, I’m betting that 2 years will mean next to nothing. It is still terrible uncertainty.

I “might” use a temp company to bring in a few non-permanent workers...temps so I don’t get stuck laying full-timers off at tremendous cost a year and a half from now.

Yesterday was all smoke and mirrors, and I’m counting on conservatives to be the only ones to see through it.

So, yes, yesterday was a “tragedy” as Christine O’Donnell aptly put it.

Let’s say the DREAM Act dies in the Senate today, and your wife Mrs. Goody dies hours later. (God forbid)

Would you have to say if Harry Reid said this on the Senate floor: “Today marks a very sad day. Today me mark the death of the DREAM Act and MEGoody’s wife.”

Keep in mind, your wife did not support Reid’s amnesty legislation and you don’t even have her buried yet.

The problem with conservatives is no one in the MSM will listen to them unless they throw a bomb first, to get attention, and then explain what they believe and why they believe it. Of course, then the MSM will ignore the explanation and only focus on the bomb.

When have you ever seen an intelligent, logical debate on what needs to be done to address unemployment on the MSM? When have you seen the comparison of unemployment benefits to painkillers (treating symptoms, not the underlying disease). Never.

Why? The MSM would rather make unemployment benefits a debate on charity and kindness (helping the poor) vs. meanness and cruelty (starving the poor). Meanwhile, the Democrat’s base will watch the debate and cheer for charity, but an hour later will be salivating over somebody getting voted off of Survivor, or breaking a bone on Jackass.

Intelligence, logical thinking, appreciation of liberty, and American Exceptionalism is gone from the Democrat’s base. In the case of the looter class, government schools ensured it was never taught. In the case of the elites, liberal universities killed it or brainwashed it out of them.

I was making a point.

The MSM distorts everything conservatives say and then guys like Earl lom on to that distortion and run with it.

Earl seems to think more highly of Obama than O'Donnell. He uses the MSM distortions to praise Obama and diss O'Donnell.

What O'Donnell said here is perfectly correct. December 7 is a day of Tragedy. It was Pearl Harbor day, it was Elizabeth Edwards death day and it was the day the Rino Republicans returned to their big government big spending days.

If you don't think that's a tragedy, then you are buying into the liberal line as well.

I'm up for ending unemployment compensation if we also end the taxes that finance it. As it is, people have paid in and should see the payout.

As I understand it, people (actually companies for whom people work) pay into state unemployment insurance funds, then draw on those funds for six months maximum. The rates that are paid on this insurance are predicated on the assumption that unemployment compensation is to be paid for six months, not an indefinite time period.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the 99-week federal unemployment bullcrap being constitutional. If a state wants to pay people for being unemployed, that's their business. If I don't like my state's policies, as a last resort I can vote with my feet and go to a state that more closely conforms to my beliefs. If the federal government does something I don't like, the only way I can vote with my feet is to leave the country. This is an important reason that our Founding Fathers set up the Constitution so that the federal government has very limited and enumerated powers.
