Beirut - Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, chairman of the Arab Thought Foundation (ATF), has urged Arabs to play an effective role in the making of human civilization. Addressing ATF’s annual conference here, he commended the innovative initiatives made by Arabs in various fields that include modern technology. Prince Khaled also emphasized the importance of interfaith and cultural dialogue initiated by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah. (Snip) Speaking about Arabs’ role in civilization, the prince said: “Arabs have an important role to play in planning the world’s future in the light of its role in the past.”

What was their last major invention after the numeral “0”? (which I think they stole from the Indians or Egyptians, IIRC)

In the case of Arab Muslims- I don’t know, but maybe cutting back on mass murder would be a start? Just sayin...

Both the zero and algebra, commonly attributed to Arabic culture originally came from India. They did make a mean astrolabe though.

Of course! This reminds me of Chekov in the old “Star Trek” series claiming that every human invention was invented by the Russians.

Which reminds me of a joke.

The Saudi ambassador came up to George Bush and said, “I’ve seen this American series called “Star Trek.”

“I’ve noticed that there are nationalities from around the world on the starship Enterprise - there is an African woman, an American from Iowa, an Asian, a Russian - everyone. But I have never seen an Arab. Can you explain that to me?”

President Bush smiled at him and said, “Mr. Ambassador, that’s because “Star Trek” takes place in the future.”

I believe they can rightly be given credit for some of the recent advances in technology - suicide bomb vests, IEDs, shoe bombs, underware bombs, and airport weapons scanners.

They have also led the way in eco-friendly technologies, such as population reduction efforts, re-forestation of poppy fields, and toilet paper usage reducction techniques.

A most enlightened folk.

What are all you fussing about. The Arabs gave us many things:

A violent religion of conquest
Abject poverty
Blood feuds and rituals
Vendettas
Illiteracy
Intolerance
Bigotry
Deceit
Mayhem
Honor killings
Murder
Slavery

Should I go on? There's more...

No need to to - you've hit all of the high points of Arab "accomplishments" for the past 14 or so centuries.

As Paul Harvey had been known to say, the backward, tribal, Muslim Ottoman/Arab is neither ready for nor capable of a stable, free, elected government. The terrorist attackers of September 11th used that which their culture could never have invented to destroy that which their culture could never have built. The Iraqis, for example, have recently received a gift of self-determination that they did not really want and will not be able to properly care for.

Well if the Arab-Muslims and other Muslims are, as Paul harvey used to say: “the backward, tribal, Muslim Ottoman/Arab is neither ready for nor capable of a stable, free, elected government”, then why is the US, Israel and Europe trying to broker a “peace deal” 15 years after the Oslo Peace accords? What is the point? The Palestinians are nowhere near an agreement and they are divided between HAMAS and the more “moderate” P.L.O., called P.A.? They are not yet a civilzation ripe for peace or nation building. Killing Jews, yes, building a viable society? No.

Also, let's be specific: the ancient civilisation of Sumer and Akkad and Assyria were Assyrians or Elamites or northern Semitic (Aramaic, etc) tribes. Egyptians were a different mix of various groups. Yemenis of old were Shebans and then part of the Ethiopian Axumite Empire

True "Arabs" are bedouin, the ones form the Najib and Hejd. These are and have always been barbarians.

For them to claim Sumer, Akkad etc. as Arab is stupid, especially for the SAuds to do so -- I can understand the Egyptians being proud, but Sauds? naaah.
