Iran Placing Medium-Range Missiles in Venezuela; Can Reach the U.S.
Hudson New York ^ | 12/09/10 | Anna Mahjar-Barducci

Posted on 12/09/2010 9:32:14 AM PST by MissesBush

Iran is planning to place medium-range missiles on Venezuelan soil, based on western information sources[1], according to an article in the German daily, Die Welt, of November 25, 2010. According to the article, an agreement between the two countries was signed during the last visit o Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to Tehran on October19, 2010. The previously undisclosed contract provides for the establishment of a jointly operated military base in Venezuela, and the joint development of ground-to-ground missiles.

At a moment when NATO members found an agreement, in the recent Lisbon summit (19-20 November 2010), to develop a Missile Defence capability to protect NATO's populations and territories in Europe against ballistic missile attacks from the East (namely, Iran), Iran's counter-move consists in establishing a strategic base in the South American continent - in the United States's soft underbelly.

According to Die Welt, Venezuela has agreed to allow Iran to establish a military base manned by Iranian missile officers, soldiers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Venezuelan missile officers. In addition, Iran has given permission for the missiles to be used in case of an "emergency". In return, the agreement states that Venezuela can use these facilities for "national needs" – radically increasing the threat to neighbors like Colombia. The German daily claims that according to the agreement, Iranian Shahab 3 (range 1300-1500 km), Scud-B (285-330 km) and Scud-C (300, 500 and 700 km) will be deployed in the proposed base. It says that Iran also pledged to help Venezuela in rocket technology expertise, including intensive training of officers

Venezuela has also become the country through which Iran intends to bypass UN sanctions. Following a new round of UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic, for example, Russia decided not to sell five battalions of S-300PMU-1 air defence systems to Iran. These weapons, along with a number of other weapons, were part of a deal, signed in 2007, worth $800 million. Now that these weapons cannot be delivered to Iran, Russia is looking for new customers; according to the Russian press agency Novosti[2], it found one: Venezuela.

Novosti reports the words of Igor Korotchenko, head of a Moscow-based think tank on international arms trade, saying that if the S-300 deal with Venezuela goes through, Caracas should pay cash for the missiles, rather than take another loan from Russia. "The S-300 is a very good product and Venezuela should pay the full amount in cash, as the country's budget has enough funds to cover the deal ," Korotchenko said. Moscow has already provided Caracas with several loans to buy Russian-made weaponry, including a recent $2.2-mln loan on the purchase of 92 T-72M1M tanks, the Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems and other military equipment.

If Iran, therefore, cannot get the S-300 missiles directly from Russia, it can still have them through its proxy, Venezuela, and deploy them against its staunchest enemy, the U.S..

But that is not all. According to Reuters, Iran has developed a version of the Russian S-300 missile and will test-fire it soon, as declared by the official news agency IRNA, two months after Moscow cancelled the delivery to comply with United Nations sanctions[3]. Iran, in fact, has its own capabilities for constructing missiles that could carry atomic warheads. According to a study recently released by the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London, Iran is presently aiming to perfect the already existing solid-fuel, medium-range missile that can carry a nuke to hit regional targets, such as Israel[4]. If a missile base can be opened in Venezuela, many US cities will be able to be reached from there even with short-medium range missiles.

The situation that is unfolding in Venezuela has some resemblance to the Cuba crisis of 1962. At that time, Cuba was acting on behalf of the USSR; now Venezuela is acting on behalf of Iran. At present, the geopolitical situation is very different: the world is no longer ruled by two superpowers; new nations, often with questionable leaders and the ambition of acquiring global status, are appearing on the international scene. Their danger to the free world will be greater if the process of nuclear proliferation is not stopped. Among the nations that aspire to become world powers, Iran has certainly the best capabilities of posing a challenge to the West.

Back in the 1962, thanks to the stern stance adopted by the then Kennedy administration, the crisis was defused

Nowadays, however, we do not see the same firmness from the present administration. On the contrary, we see a lax attitude, both in language and in deeds, that results in extending hands when our adversaries have no intention of shaking hands with us. Iran is soon going to have a nuclear weapon, and there are no signs that UN sanctions will in any way deter the Ayatollah's regime from completing its nuclear program. We know that Iran already has missiles that can carry an atomic warhead over Israel and over the Arabian Peninsula. Now we learn that Iran is planning to build a missile base close to the US borders. How longer do we have to wait before the Obama administration begins to understand threats?

How long before these are nuclear tipped? Does anyone think this would have happened under Bush or a President McCain? Does anyone think North Korea would be pulling the crap it's pulling under either? I hope America soon wakes up to the reality that not only has Obama worsened the economy through his cluelessness, he has weakened national security through his weakness.

How long before these are nuclear tipped?

If Iran is still using the nuke designs they got from Pakistan and North Korea it could be a while. The Shahab-3 can only loft 2,200 pounds. For a depleted Uranium bomb in the 12 KT range (the type developed by Pakistan and the type that could be build with the fuel produced in Iran's centrifuges) would be considerably larger than that. It is possible to get a bomb that size down to under 2000 pounds, but it would require a more advanced design than what the Pakistani's have tested. And if Iran was developing a more advanced design they would need to test it before it could be deployed.

Of course the Russians or Chinese could just sell them some of their tactical nukes and we would be completely screwed. Under a normal president I would say the chance of that was fairly low. But with a craven coward like Obama they might risk it.

Extended range S-300s with limited ABM capabilities. Good kit and not something we would want to take on without heavy suppression. They wouldn't stop us, but they would prevent a quick "Raid" by conventional forces.

Of course if you can't see it you can't shoot it. B-2s escorted by F-22s could mess up his missile sites. Or we could use our Ohio class SSGNs. They can throw 154 tomahawks in a single volley. And he only has 100 missiles with which to shoot them down. And not even that many launchers.

The uranium is turning as we speak. Rogue states everywhere are on the waiting list for the great equalizer. It's not like our best and brightest have telegraphed anything else with North Korea showing the way.

Contrast that with Lybia and Syria, who had fast and total responses when they didn't play nice and adults were in charge.

The only thing that keeps us secure and safe besides a military, is a prosperous and freemarket economy. Without prosperity we are not respected as a nation and culture. We are all about someone wanting to be like us or to share in our prosperity.

All that flatline talk from obomobots and our reduced stature(now we're humble, not arrogant) in the world as being a good thing was just dangerous and irresponsible.

If Venezuela even tries to allow that missile base to be built, that base will be promptly attacked by B-1B's and B-2A's based in the USA armed with various types of "smart" bombs.

Besides, the range of these missiles threaten much of the South American continent, possibly with enough range to even take out Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

However, the US was already considering phasing out the Jupiter IRBM because being fueled by cryogenic fuels, it would have taken too long to make them launch ready. Remember, by 1962 the US Navy already had several George Washington-class Polaris submarines in operation, and they could reach well into the Soviet Union operating beneath the waters of the Atlantic Ocean between Iceland and Norway.

It's amazing how few people know about this, and the lengths the MSM goes to make sure the number remains small.

If the missiles are to be delivered by ship, I say wait until the vessel is somewhere over the Puerto Rico trench, (the second deepest ocean trench in the world), and put a heavy torpedo into her. An electronic warfare bird in the vicinity can make sure no “mayday” messages get out and suddenly we have another victim of the Bermuda Triangle.

Kennedy was looking to remove the Jupiter IRBM’s well before the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Jupiters were only intended as a stopgap until more reliable ICBM’s and SLBM’s were on line. The Jupiter was already obsolete in 1962. Liquid fueled, using cryogenic liquid oxygen as the oxidizer was the major risk. From go order to launch would be maybe one hour. Add the launchers were above ground fixed emplacements. So the missiles would likely never make it to launch if the balloon went up. The Soviets already knew the locations, the launch pads in Italy were overflown by Warsaw Pact reconnaisance planes.
About the same time the Minuteman missiles were coming on line (hardened silos, fast reaction time), and also the first Polaris submarine (even if they were in the East Med, try finding them, Admiral Gorschkov). One Polaris sub, with 16 missiles, sailing somewhere quantitatively replaced one Jupiter squadron. And we built 41 of them, plus the Royal Navy had theirs.
So getting rid of the Jupiters, already obsolete and an operational liability, turned out to me more of a face saving measure for Khrushchev.
The real reason why Khrushchev pulled the missiles out was not just Kennedy going to DEFCON 2, but also Castro and Che Guevara were seriously considering taking the missiles, launching, and starting WW3. A step that even Khrushchev would not take. Not the case though for Imadinnerjacket. He wants the nukes to fly, in order to bring forth his “Twelfth Imam”, and doesn’t care if his country is incinerated in the process. But also in this case, we do not have a President with the resolve to stand up to the threat. JFK was indeed ready to unleash Curtis Lemay.
