Destitute TV Girl Finally Died of Starvation

By Kang Won Cheol

[2010-12-09 18:07 ]

▲ The 23-year old girl, as she appeared in the Asia Press film.

A 23-year old, poverty-stricken young woman who appeared in newspapers and on TV around the world when she was filmed by a cameraman inside North Korea died of starvation in October, it has been revealed.

The woman, who appeared in a KBS special program, “North Korea’s Third Generation Succession: Who Is Kim Jong Eun?” alongside global media including the BBC(UK) and Asahi TV(Japan) amply demonstrated the dire straits in which some North Korean people live. Reduced to rags following the death of both her parents, she said she wandered the fields looking for grasses.

Speaking with the cameraman, who asked what she planned to do with the grass, the girl, who admitted that she also slept outside, said, “I’m going to eat it.”

Speaking with The Daily NK today, Asia Press said, “According to Kim Dong Cheol, who interviewed the girl in South Pyongan Province while he was doing some research inside North Korea in June, she died on or around October 20th.”

“It was discovered that, without a home, she had been wandering in the market and on the streets, before dying in a corn field,” the Asia Press spokesperson explained, “Since then was harvest time, she went there to eat corn but seems to have died of starvation.”

Her body was apparently already decomposing by the time it was found, but the local People’s Safety Ministry agents were in no hurry to deal with it because she did not have any family, so it was left for a long time.

According to Asia Press, “The chaotic situation caused by the currency redenomination in November last year has caused an increase in kotjebi numbers across the country, and in some regions there have been people dying of starvation. She was also a victim of that impractical plan.”

A lot of people living in this country right now are calling in to conservative talk shows and asking the same question. “What’s wrong with socialism and communism?” They won’t bother reading this.

Their brains don’t function properly.

They know that North Korea is communist and it’s a horrible place. They just think that a little bit of socialism here and there is beneficial to all.

From each according to his ability too each according to his need

Remember Socialists and commies "care" about people

This truly saddens me and makes me wonder why the leftist here want that kind of power, I mean the power to starve this poor woman death, is what progress is?

This was filmed during an undercover mission. Probably by another N. Korean, who also has to watch his/her back. Not sure he/she gave her something to eat.

WHY THE HELL DIDN’T THE NEWSPEOPLE WHO INTERVIEWED HER FEED HER?

That is the perfect question. The sad part is the answer is that they are liberals- they claim to be compassionate but really they are apathetic. It just doesn't occur to them. They are too busy asking why someone else doesn't do something while they munch on a snicker's bar in front of a starving young woman.

If the US, SK and elements of NK could topple the Kim’s “quietly” and install a pretender government that could make slow changes we might avoid a war.

The south might not be able to absorb the north but they can certainly help keep it from starvation. With reforms (death of communism) and demilitarizations, the north could improve with help.

WHY THE HELL DIDN’T THE NEWSPEOPLE WHO INTERVIEWED HER FEED HER?

I'm sure there's a good answer. Like they did feed her, but were not with her long enough to make a difference. Or, their minder wouldn't allow it perhaps.

It is SK's plan to establish satellite regime in NK and start gradual unification. NK has to develop on its own merit. Its cheap labor should be used to its advantage, unlike German case, where W. Germany tried to bring up E. Germans to W. German level overnight. W. Germany should have kept E. Germany as its satellite and develop it by treating it as another Czech Republic for some duration.

In W. Germany' case, they had a choice. in SK's case, they have no choice but to take the path of NK as a satellite regime. Externally, Korea would be one. Internally it would be made of two distinct blocs, with border control and (probably) separate currency.

That's the idea. Whether the plan can survive the chaos of NK regime's breakup is another question. NK is not going to quietly phase itself out. China won't cooperate in that regard either. The only choice is a messy uncontrollable process.

I had forgotten the term "kotjebi".

"Kotjebi or kotchebi (꽃제비) is a Korean term denoting North Korean homeless children. The term literally means "fluttering swallows", given because of the kotjebi's constant search for food and shelter.[1] The kotjebi are not officially recognized in North Korea, with any mention of the term being prohibited in state publications and documents.

The kotjebi are constantly forced to seek food and thus gather in groups to beg and pickpocket.[2] Most of the kotjebi eat only once a day. The diet of the kotjebi, along with the food they obtain from begging, consists mainly of grass soup, wild vegetable porridge, and grass roots."

Reduced to eating grass and tree bark. No telling what stories of survival will come out from NK when they collapse.

Probably worse than Stalingrad stories.

The field you see is probably family plots on a hill. Everybody in N. Korea tries to secure a small plot of land outside government farm, and grow their own food there. These plots are not government sanctioned. Gov. reluctantly leave them alone, but crack down on them from time to time. The plot makes many N. Koreans survive, but barely.

As for technical assessment of her health, I don't know whether her condition falls into malnutrition or starvation. Seems she is awfully emaciated even compared with other ordinary N. Koreans.

The woman in the photo is basically homeless. She(or her family) does not own the plot. She is relegated to picking grass outside the field. I doubt that she is allowed to pick crops in the field, since there are many such wandering N. Koreans, and most are barely getting by.

When you go into a village/region where everyone is starving, you cannot feed all of them so you end not feeding any of them.

They are all blaming the USA. In particular, the bombing by the USA allegedly destroyed the farmland and makes it unfit for farming.

Now, instead of helping the DPRK, the USA is printing more money. This makes it the target of derision all across Asia, not just in communist Asia. Being a warmonger is one thing, I suppose, but being responsible for diluting the paper money supply affects and angers virtually everyone.

True but I have also seen my share of poor in SK as well. Living in mud huts with thatched roofs. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand the plight of NK but every society has it’s share of homeless, hungry and wandering people. Funny that here in the US we eat 3-4 times more food than we actualy need to stay healthy.

>>I’m just sayin, it takes alot for someone to actualy starve to death.<<

That’s true but when people become scavengers they end up with worms and viruses that attack their organs and immune system. When the end comes, it’s like running out toilet paper, happens too fast.

The sad part is the answer is that they are liberals- they claim to be compassionate but really they are apathetic.

You know how liberals are - these camerafolk were obviously angling for a free stay at one of North Korea's government run health spas for themselves and their families (and a couple following generations thereof). Nothing but parasites, happy to let hard working North Korean taxpayers pay for their room and board while they live lives of pampered leisure.

Inside North Korea - exclusive footage.

Guaranteed.
