A Columbia political science professor has been charged with having a sexual relationship with his 24-year-old daughter, the Columbia Daily Spectator reports.
David Epstein, 46, was charged Thursday with one count of third-degree incest. Police told the Spectator that the relationship appeared consensual.
Epstein is currently on administrative leave.
According to the New York Daily News, Epstein and the woman had a three-year sexual relationship and often exchanged "twisted text messages."
The Spectator reports that Epstein is married to another Columbia political science professor, Sharyn O'Halloran, though a recent update to his Facebook page says he is single. The couple was featured in a 2008 Spectator article about professors who "bring love to work."
"Our complementary skills lead to a great partnership," O'Halloran told the Spectator.
One student described Epstein, who was teaching a class on game theory this semester, as a "very nice guy." Outside of his professorial duties, Epstein also blogged for this website, on topics ranging from torture to Sarah Palin.

Where is the "between consenting adults" crowd on this one?
Double-dating with Woody Allen?
This is how socialists and Islamists become inbred degenerates.
Or the future King of England
Worse than that ~ this guy is a major taxpayer ~ check out http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2010/10/memo_to_bruce_m.php
What would consitute a 2nd and 1st degree offense? Is third degree worse than 2nd degree? These degree things confuse me.
Oh and BTW - this is just maximum icky.
The Marxists make another pitch to bring down civilization, I gather?
Wasn’t there another case recently...someone from the Mamas & the Papas?
Just another hill to take, like polygamy. After this, maybe a guy with a really cute spaniel or a chicken maybe.
Well the daughter’s not a minor, so maybe first degree is reserved for youngsters.
In any case give her a few years she’ll sue him and the college too.
Married Profs Bring Love To Work

Other couples, like professor Sharyn OHalloran and her husband professor David Epstein, work closely in the same fieldin their case, political science. The two have co-authored many of their works. Our complementary skills lead to a great partnership, she said. This collaboration is present in their home as well, where, according to OHalloran, an economist, they split household chores along comparative advantage and our marginal rates of productivity are maximized at every turn.
You're thinking of Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of John Phillips.
I’ll bite. Sure it’s “icky” - but if she’s over 21 - I figure that’s her problem, not society’s. Sure she could end up being pregnant etc. etc. - but this is NOT the same as abuse of a minor IMHO.
See, Sargent Schutt, as a resident of Mississippi, sued under a state law that doesn't exist in many other places in the country. He sued you for "alienation of affection": In other words, he was holding you liable for screwing up his marriage. You can't do that in New York, or in California, or in Florida. But in Mississippi? Well, they have a different set of ideas down there about stealing away a man's woman. (Just to make things interesting, you turned around and sued Linda and Schutt and Schutt's dad, claiming they were just trying to extort you.)
Time was that adultery was a crime.
Bet these guys know each other.
Did the daughter turn him in on this, otherwise how would he get charged with something of this nature?
He blogged on torture and Sarah Palin. Let’s see his checklist.
Waterboard Terrorists - No
Sarah Palin Presidential - No
Bang Own Daughter - Yes
I’m glad he has his Ivy League priorities in order. When is he up for Emeritus?
Typically a “1st Degree” charge is more serious than a “3rd degree” charge. It gets confusing because a “3rd offense” indicates repetitions behavior and will often have enhanced sentencing.
A first degree offense would probably apply in the case of force, or of a minor’s involvement. I don;t know this state’s statutes and am too lazy to look them up.
Criminal law is inherently icky and demoralizing.
You should read the HuffPo comments - sick.
These people tie up a tremendous amount of court resources thrashing out their problems ~ the rich ones do anyway. The poor ones just have another baby somewhere else, or lock the girl in the basement.
That’s a lengthy article about a guy named Bruce. This is a thread about a man named Epstein. What’s the connection?
Bruce began his affair with his daughter in 1998 when she was at college. The girl in the thread article is 24 years old.
Many years ago this situation existed between a father and adult daughter with whom I had a professional acquaintance. It ended in a murder suicide.
But...but...isn’t this his lifestyle choice? How dare people judge his love, forcing him to live a lie? /sarc/
Heard on the Hudson:
“Row faster. I hear banjos.”
The twit pictured, future King of England, has one of the best known human pedigrees out there, and there is NOT that much consanguinity in the family history.
Much ado about nothing was made of the problems of Hemophilia among the children of Queen Victoria, and often people who don't know any better talk about inbreeding. That was NOT the problem. You didn't need to inherit two copies to be a hemophiliac, you just needed one copy on your X chromosome if you are a male.
The problem with Queen Victoria having a mutation on her X chromosome for a blood clotting factor was not due to or exacerbated by inbreeding.
But BECAUSE the royals all married among each other, at the start of WWI, the Czar of Russia, the King of England, and the Kaiser of Germany were all cousins, and all descendants of Queen Victoria - and the Czar's heir was a bleeder.
"Janie's got a gun..."
If she was an adult, if he committed incest, didn’t she as well?
Is the “daughter” his biological child, or the child of his wife, fathered by another...?
Could you furnish a source link? Thanks.
Now that is a zinger of a story.
Money can buy you a lot of stuff ~ including, apparantly, a daughter in the sack.
You didn't think this was about some poor guy living in a flop house did you?
This is sick, but I’m surprised that it’s illegal.
D*mn double standards.
But if the daughter was actually fathered by another man,i.e. is a step-daughter,then it may still be icky, but there is no inbreeding,so why bother with them?
They are busy sbmitting approving comments on HuffPo:
"[I] say just as long as they are doing proper family planning (that is, various forms of birth-control) to make sure they do not produce an offspring, which would be high-risk for a myriad of genetic disorders, I see no crime.Gross? Yes. But, sometimes--especially in a free republic--you have to put aside universal morality and just let people live their lives. We are no longer a Puritan society."
-- holierdandao
"Public shame will be sufficient to end this. It is not a viable coupling. Apparently it's an issue between consenting adults. I'm not sure on what principles the charges would be, considering that law would have to arbitrarily override individual liberty of consenting adults. They do it already with prostitutes and their patrons, but consenting adults should not be charged with crimes for what they agree to do."

Classic butt kisser pose. Interesting that his “wife” is not listed in the political science faculty directory. Hmmmmm.
Hey wait - good point - much much less Ick in that scenario.
But I gotta think that if that was the case there would not be this fuss. Is that even incest?
***This is sick, but Im surprised that its illegal.***
Our Judeo Christian laws were built on morality and acceptable behavior towards one another. Adultery and incest are two of the most destructive behaviors to a successful civilization.

She's 24? Why wasn't she arrested too?
Is adultery illegal? There are other destructive sexual behaviors which are not illegal, also. This is why I'm surprised.
If he is her biological father, but they were using contraceptives, then there would also be no inbreeding. Would that be OK?
"[I] say just as long as they are doing proper family planning (that is, various forms of birth-control) to make sure they do not produce an offspring, which would be high-risk for a myriad of genetic disorders, I see no crime.
And to be equally absurd...
"[I] say just as long as they are doing proper family STD planning (that is, various forms of birth-control fresh condom usage, monogamous relationship, STD testing ) to make sure they do not produce an offspring, which would be high-risk for a myriad of genetic disorders spread deadly diseases , I see no crime."
Oh wait, that is "wrong" to restrict homosexuals from random bathroom hookups.
I’m pretty libertarian, but that’s just beyond wrong. Parents are supposed to protect their kids, not...damn.
Adultery used to be considered bigamy; ergo illegal. i.e. cohabiting with someone other than your spouse.
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/marriage
Under the law, yes.
I say that (actually it could depend on the state) because California charged adults (male and female, the girl was older but male was prosecuted) not one month after the Lawrence v. Texas case (they were both adopted by the same family, he got her pregnant) and neither was related by blood.
Anyway,it is certainly "icky" and all,and I don't condone it,but I just wonder if maybe, just maybe, the resources of the State might be better spent on finding ,convicting, and KEEPING incarcerated the many violent offenders in the population.
But this does make another sensationalist story to distract people from the major destructive forces.
Sounds like a ‘Rat hero to me. Let’s see. How about “breaking down the false capitalist barriers to family intimacy erected by Republican zealots.” Sound about right ?
/sarcasm
I don’t see a problem here. After all, incest is prohibited in the same chapter as homosexuality. If one is okey-dokey, then the other should be, too. /s
The big problem here is usually these relationships (?) if it can be called that start with years of conditioning and rarely wait until the child is 18 to begin.I’d lay money on it will come out later that Daddy started doing this many years ago and they were just caught.
