Six American soldiers were killed and more than a dozen American and Afghan soldiers were wounded on Sunday morning when a van packed with explosives detonated beside a small joint outpost in southern Afghanistan.
The soldiers were at a new strong point in a small mud-walled building near the village of Sangsar, north of the Arghandab River, when the bomber drove up to one of the buildings walls and exploded his charge at about 9 a.m.
The blast was easily audible roughly 8 miles away, and sent a dusty mushroom cloud towering over the farmland.
The explosion blasted a large hole in the thick wall, causing the roof to collapse on soldiers inside. Other soldiers quickly arrived and clawed and pulled at the waist-deep rubble to free the buried troops.
The building had been occupied by American and Afghan troops for only a few days, an American official said, and was beside a narrow road. It was not immediately clear how the vehicle managed to approach as closely as it did without being challenged or stopped.
General Abdul-Hameed, a commander in the Afghan National Army, said by telephone that his soldiers had tried to stop the van but that its driver ignored them, drove toward the building and rammed the vehicle against its exterior wall.

“his soldiers had tried to stop the van but that its driver ignored them”
Isn’t that what your guns are for?
Not if you have orders telling you not to shoot.
They were AMERICAN, not “NATO” troops, as expected.
Dear God,Prayers for them and their families.
Still not clear what happened, and we may never get an honest report. But if it’s true that someone told the truck to stop, yet it just kept going, then I have to wonder what the rules of engagement were. And whose idea was it to put their strongpoint right next to a road that was open for use?
We just had a potluck reception in our local community center for three national guard troops from our neighborhood who are just back from a year in Afghanistan. Thank God they got out in one piece. And prayers for our remaining troops there.
Why do they always report NATO troops at first? I knew it... *crying graphic* Prayers
it really pisses me off that they always say “NATO” troops.
Good for you - if there is an obvious example of candy-ass reporting to cover the Obamanator’s ass in this war, it’s this “NATO troop” crap....
America is being played by Obama and “Osama”.
The ROE are being used to deliberately hurt American forces.
I'm sick of it and want to see the truth.
I say bring our troops home or take off all restrains and fight this battle to win.
Amen to that!!!! This is horrible. Isn’t it time to let the troops decide when it’s a good time to shoot or not? I’m totally sick to death of the Washington elite. This is congress fault, they won’t let them fight. To many rules of engagement that end up favoring the terrorist. Innocent civis will always get caught in the middle and end up dying. It’s part of war, you want to cut that down as much as possible. But, not at the expense of our troops.
Must be Obama’s ROEs.....we should nuke every valley and mountaintop in that forsaken country and denude it of people once and for all.
I hate it when they call American troops “NATO troops.” It’s all part of Obama’s campaign to make the US unimportant.
That said, why in the world are we not defending ourselves better against these attacks from local Muslims? Every week we read about an “Afghan policeman” or “Afghan interpreter” or “Afghan military recruit” blowing up or shooting numbers of our people. Why are they allowed to get this close to our forces?
Disasters all abound.
libs will not care, its only bad to them if you can bash the dead over a conservative republicans presidents head. other than that... no concern
Possibly. Apparently the perimeter was guarded (after a fashion) by the Afghan army, and they called to the truck to halt but it didn’t and for some reason they couldn’t fire on it. Possibly that’s the result of the ROE, which affect any place where there are American forces.
I wish they would indicate which province this happened in. My son is over there.
This, and all Petreas’s CSM has to worry himself with is how to $hitcan any good soldiers who object to DADT.
joining you in prayers...and tears.
I can’t imagine what you are going through..
Prayers lifted for your son and for you.
How many is that this week, this month? Why are we not getting a count like during Bush? So far we’re on course for a record coalition death toll.
Lousy news. I was wondering the other day, why is it that in Iraq and ‘Stan the bad guys have no trouble getting bombs to detonate, but on our soil (and yesterday in Sweden), they fail over and over.
I guess part of the answer is availability of explosives. But in London didn’t they go 3 for 4 with successful bus bombings? In Madrid, they had success. Tim McVeigh got a homemade device to work with terrible. We could have had 4-5 OK Cities by now.
It seems odd.
Because we sent out forces ~7,000 miles around the world to be in the midst of them. Maybe you think we can build a puppet government and army by some other method, I'm all ears.
“...with terrible results.”
Rules Of Engagement are killing our guys.
Beautiful and touching, thank you for sharing it.
As a member of the Patriot Guard, I have been on way too many missions for our Fallen..and it breaks my heart everytime.
I pray you hear from you son soon. My son did 3 deployments in Iraq (44 months) and I was a nervous wreck never knowing if any of the incidents involved his company.
When you hear from your son thank him for me for his service.
This bombing was prepared by one guy, who is an expert, and executed by another, who is just an expendable patsy. The expert lives on to make another bomb. This is because there are many people in Afghanistan, and out of that large number you can find experts and suiciders. And, of course, you need to consider that Afghanistan is in a state of war for last 20 years, and a whole new generation grew up who never saw peace, doesn't know what it is for, and is comfortable with weapons and explosives.
Terrorists within the USA are, so far, stupid. They aren't bright enough to build a working bomb. Tim McVeigh wasn't stupid, and his bomb gutted a large building. Eventually AQ will send enough instructors into the USA, and once that happens the bombs will be very deadly. Those instructors may be already in the country, since the border is open for anyone willing to hike; it's even more open for those who carry weapons. The safe houses are already here (mosques.)
((((((Hugs)))))))Hope you find out soon.
Hope not. Hope your son is o.k. too.
Thank you. You are the best of us. You always will be.
DEAR GOD PLEASE BRING OUR SOLDIERS HOME! PLEASE GOD.
Well, we would have to include Pakistan as well. Which I wouldn't really have a problem with. They all hide in the mountainous regions on the Afghan/ Paki border. Pakistan does nothing.
Personally, I favor cultivating a friendship with India.
That’s a good answer, and I agree with most of what you say. I think your take will explain 30-50% of the problem. I don’t think it can cover the vast difference in competency. If an expert makes the bomb, any fool can push the detonator, it’s the construction that is failing.
If you go all the way back to Richard Reed, there has been an amazing run of failure. Hmmmm. Perhaps your idea about high quality fixers located in country explains more than I first thought.
Thanks for food for thought.
This was a vulnerable, remote base and hardly the place for what you call “building a puppet army.” I know we’re bending over backwards trying to prove that we’re not there to disrupt their miserable way of life, but personally, I’d suspect they don’t fear us enough.
Nephew here. I haven’t heard that he received his last package, although he is “out” a lot. Prayers.
It's called "conditioning"
Soon, it won't piss you off...if you know what's good for you.
For what ?
